John was written to a church, or group of churches, in crisis - churches who were being attacked by false teachers.
John has 2 primary objectives in his letter to address this issue:
1) To combat propaganda of the false teachers doctrinally, morally, and socially.
2) To reassure believers.
Purpose
Purpose
To promote true joy in the child of God.
To prevent the child of God from committing sin.
To protect the child of God from false teachers.
To provide assurance of salvation for the child of God.
And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
