Introduction

Exposition
There is a different level of responsibility and accountability that comes with
the role of being a teacher.
The serious nature of teaching God’s Word.
The tongue stumbles and sins often.
The ability to control one’s speech is an indicator of spiritual maturity.
If one can control their speech, they can better control their whole
being.
Illustration
Similar to a doctor. They are held to a higher standard because of the impact
they can have on their patients’ lives.
Every action must be precise. Like a surgeon must
control his instruments, we must manage our speech to avoid causing
harm.
Application
How well do you control your tongue? Consider its impact on those
around you.
The influence of the tongue (3:3-5a)
Exposition
Small components have a profound influence on large entities.
The tongue can direct and shape the course of one’s life.
Illustration
A small rudder can direct a ship. A small hole can sink a ship. It has a
disproportionately large impact on the boat’s integrity.
Application
Practical tips for using the tongue positively.
The destruction the tongue causes (3:5b-6)
Exposition
The tongue is a source of unrighteousness – a vessel for deceit, slander,
gossip and criticism.
The destructive power of the tongue originates in evil and corruption.
The misuse of the tongue aligns with the forces of hell.
Illustration
A match lighting a firework. It can be magnificent or it can be
hazardous.
Application
We get to choose which it will be. We must be vigilant in controlling
our tongues before they create chaos by developing better speech habits:
prayer, meditating on Scripture, seeking accountability from others.
