Verse 1 through 5:
Verse 1 through 5:
Lets start with verse 1 here in 1st John 3:1
1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
From this verse here in Chapter 3 of 1st John. we come to see and understand that this verse is almost a continuation from the last verse in 1st John 2:29. We see that John continues how those who exhibit righteousness are the begotten sons God. we can see all this from 1 John 2:29
29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.
and 1st John 2:19
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.
and 1st John 2:5
5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
and we can finally look Mk 13:1
1 Then as He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!”
Just from these verse here we can see that John was trying to get his readers attention or to impress his readers. John was trying to fix his readers attention on the measure of Love here in the 1st verse here in chapter 3. As Christians we come to understand that John also explains how this love is reveal to on all Christians behalf. Now if we look at the phrase here in this 1st verse here in 1st John 3:1. The Manner of Love what does John mean by this? what is John trying to explain to the early Church? What John is trying to explain to early church and early Christians is that the Manner of Love is describe as the quality of love that God gives his children, as Christians today and the early Christians we come to understand that this kind of love is not reveal by size but through blessing that come through our daily lives. God’s love is unmeasurable and true blessedness. All Christians see that through John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Just from this verse we come to understand as Christians just how much God love the world that he was willing to send his son to die for all. allow all to chose to become God’s children if they wish to do so. As humans we have a choice to make in this life. a very simple one but at the same time a very difficult decision to make. are we going to live for God, by doing God’s will and live according to how God wants us to live, or are we going to live a life separated from God, by chasing our own desires and passion within the world? This allow us to look at the second part of the 1st verse here in 1st John 3:1
1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
what is John trying to explain within this statement, “therefore the world does not know us”? how does the world not know us? Because it does not know God. As Christians we come to understand that world does not know who God is, therefore the world will not recognized the children of God. and thing we can look at from this verse here is the word known. John uses this word very often with in his writing’s. usually when John uses this word there is a much deeper meaning behind it. As Christians we come to understand that the world knows that Christians are in it. The world also understand that Christians only worship God. We also understand that world does not approve lives of Christians, nor does the world acknowledge God as their’s sovereign and King. a similar passage we can look comes the gospel of John 15:18-19
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
As Christians we come to understand that the world does not love God, As God had love the world. we also come to understand that we are not from the world therefore the world but from God. As Christians we come to understand that the world will love its own rather to love those from God. As Christians we come understand that God had chosen us from out of the world too. this allow us to move to verse 2 here in 1st John 3:2
2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
From this verse what is John trying to explain to the early church and to early Christians? From the christian point view we come to understand that once we chosen to follow God, and are baptized we are able to consider ourselves to be adopted Children in God’s family. As Christians we understand that God recognized us as his children and that is enough for us. another thing we can look at from this verse is this question here It is not yet been reveal what shall we be? does this not raise any kind of questions regarding our present status? what are your thought on this second part of verse 2 here? another question to think is even though we do not know anything about the next life does this allow any room for doubt regarding our present relations with God? As Christians we understand that because we become adopted into God’s family, we are God’s family therefore share in blessing that come within the sonship. This allows us to continue with verse 2 here 1st John 3:2
2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
Now here in the last part of the verse what John trying to explain to his readers and the early Church? what does John mean by To be revealed within this verse here? As Christians we come to understand that all who chose to follow God will be brought into light, to be made to appear, to be known. then if we look at the phrase “if He shall be revealed” what does John try to explain here? it refers to the second coming or the return of Christ. when this event occurs our imperfect self’s will vanish and we shall become like him, which means we are Children of God now, and we will still be children of God when he returns, as long as we continue in the faith, and living according to God’s standards of life. so for now we are waiting for the inheritances that we do not fully understand. we also come to understand that we are children, but we shall be able to understand the true eventually because from the last part of verse 2 we come to understand that we will eventually be like him. In order to be like we must understand who God is, and in order to understand God we must know Christ. Remember John 14:6. As Christians we come to understand that we must be like him in spirit and in body. as Christians we come to understand that our citizenship is not from this world but in heaven. Let’s turn in our Bibles to Phil 3:20-21
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
As Christians we understand that everything good comes from God, and that being like him means willing to learn from him, following the things God teaches, applying them to our daily life, learning to do the will of God, and living according to his standards. this allow us to move to verse 3 here in 1st John 3:3
3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
From this verse here what is John trying to explain to early Christians, and to the early Church? John explains that the Hope we have in being like him when he returns, must understand that he who is in possession of this hope will keep himself pure. Even when Christ returns whom we shall be like when he returns is pure. This hope is to awake in the likeness of the saviour. Somethings to keep in mind (1) is the conditionality of our Salvation. (2) The necessity of of abstaining from every form of impurity. (3) The encouragement to faithfulness which Hope affords. (4) The example of purity which Christ himself supplies. As Christians we come to understand that this passage is not be legitimately cited to sustain the view that is possible for a child of God to live above sin here. there two things that must understand (1) Such a view is opposed to other statements by the same writer we can see that here in 1st John 1:8
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
and another verse we can look comes from 1st John 2:1.
1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
