2 Corinthians 5:9-10…Judgment

Psalm 16:8 “I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.”

Introduction....

Not here to scare anyone but just want to make that everyone eyes are open and that everyone has a clear understanding...
we need to understand that like the senior saints would say, every tub will have to stand on its own bottom...
we worship together, pray together, cry together, but one day you as an individual will have to stand before the judgment seat of Christ for yourself...
i wish i could be there to help testify on your behalf but as we will see in a few moments your deeds, good and/or bad will be brought to light....
you know in the judical system of man, a.k.a the courts...
you have a judge, a jury of your peers, a defense attorney, a prosecuting attorney and you are able to have witnesses that can speak on your behalf or against you that either help or hurt your case...
but when you stand before the righteous judge, there is only one witness that counts and His name Jesus...
and you do not want him to stand and say depart from me, you worker of iniquity, Matthew 7:23..
or Matthew 10:33 “But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”
what we want to hear, Matthew 25:23 “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’”
Judgment....determining your final destination for eternity...
and it starts while we still have breath in our body...
while the blood is still running warm in our veins...
how many of you know that every time he wakes us up, he is giving us another chance to be about His business, so our good can out weigh the bad....
TALK, PREACH.....
let me throw this in there...
hell has some people in there that was in church every time it opened..
they had the religion but not the relationship...
the relationship will have you acting and working a certain way..
the way Christ laid it out for us…TALK, PREACH.....
church, we all will have to stand before the judgment seat and the saying will come to past…May the works I have done speak for me....good or bad, they will speak for you on Judgment Day...
Let’s look at the text...

History....

the Apostle Paul had a love for the church that was unbelievable...
he wanted God’s people to prosper and do the will of Christ.
he wanted the church to follow the examples and directions that Christ had laid out for the church..
and Paul had so much love that on his mission trip, not only did he plant churches he helped correct as well.
he wrote letters from prison..
he was shipwrecked
stoned, beating but he never gave up his mission..
someone would bring Paul some news about a certain church and Paul would write that letter…to correct and to encourage and to let them know that he was still praying for them
i like the meme i saw on social media, where it said if Paul was alive today, we would be getting a letter…TALK, PREACH.......
and here we have one of those letters today…to the church at Corinth...
and this is the 2nd letter to the church and this particular part of the text Paul is looking at the ministry of the church...
Paul describes how the ministry should give us hope and the assurance of an eternal home..v1-8
and because of this hope and assurance, we should want to work more diligently for Christ to please him and be accepted by him
why?
because we all must be judged and the truth will come out, the good and the bad
on your judgment day...
where will you spend eternity....
let’s go deeper into the text

Points...

Judgment...
here in verses 9 and 10 Paul is trying to opening the people’s eye and first instill hope into them.
the hope of know that if we live according to His will and do what is pleasing in His sight we can make heaven our home.
and that we will be judged accordingly but let’s be realistic that the bad will also come to light.
so why now aim to please Him and be judged righteously and enjoy eternal rest
2 Corinthians 5:9–10 “Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
verse 9, Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him
Since what we do right now has eternal consequences, our goal must persistently be to please God.

whether we be found at His coming present in the body, or absent from it.

TALK, PREACH......
now some translations use the word labour instead of aim...
but the bottom we should be working to please Him now...
We must consider that as far as we know, there are some opportunities for pleasing God that we will only have while present in these bodies. When we get to heaven, there will be no more need for faith, no more need for endurance through trials, no more need for courage and boldness in telling others about Jesus. Now, while we are present in these bodies, is our only opportunity in all eternity to please God in these areas.
TALK, PREACH.....
only what you do for Christ will last...
question is…what are you doing for Christ now…TALK, PREACH......

Paul is not selfish; his Christian service is motivated by more than a hope for the future. He seeks to please Christ and be acceptable to Him right now.

he knows heaven is in his future but he is still seeking to please Him right now…TALK,PREACH.....
to help us with our upcoming judgment, we must be working to please Him now...
don’t put off for tomorrow for what you should be doing today...
2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
to be clear..look how Paul started it…WE MUST ALL APPEAR...
we all have the same fate when it comes to the judgment…your money is no good, no earthly status is no good…but what have you have done for the building of the kingdom..
have you loved..TALK,PREACH....
When we pass from these bodies to the world beyond, we must each give account according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
look at 3 things in the text, APPEAR, RECEIVE, DONE IN THE BODY

appear—rather, “be made manifest,” namely, in our true character.

who you truly are…TALK,PREACH..
Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (Chapter 5)
receive—His reward proportioned to “the things done
TALK, PREACH.....
done in the body....accountablitity
TALK,PREACH......
just for doctrine, what Paul is talking about This is not the Great White Throne judgment (Revelation 20:11-15). This text as written by Paul describes a judgment of the works of believers (the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad).
but in Revelation, the Apostle John just took it a little further the Paul....
John was talking about the true last days while Paul was talking about individuals as they die…same concept just two different versions
What will be judged at the judgment seat of Christ? First, what we have done will be judged (the things done). Secondly, our motives for what we have done will be judged (according to what he has done, whether good or bad).
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Five: Motives for Ministry (2 Corinthians 5:9–21)

The Judgment Seat of Christ will be a place of revelation; for the word appear means “be revealed.” As we live and work here on earth, it is relatively easy for us to hide things and pretend; but the true character of our works will be exposed before the searching eyes of the Saviour.

He knows...
JUDGMENT...

conclusion..

may the works I have done be acceptable in thy sight...
may the works i have done speak for me...
may the works i have done allow me to walk the streets paved with gold..
may the works i have done, allow me to hear the words, well done thy good and faithful servant...
Paul has tried to give the church hope and open eyes to realize that what is done in the dark will come to the light...
and i hope you know who the light of the world is…Jesus..
