Sermon Body
1. Honor thy mother and father.
a. A son or daughter depends on their parents for many things, life, knowledge, wisdom, discipline, fun, excitement, wit, and many other things.
i. Jesus depends solely on the Father. This is honor and humility – the giving up of self or personal identity.
1. As the Father works, the son will also work. V19
a. Apprenticeships are more common in history than our American vocational system.
b. Do as I Do vs. Do what I say, not what I do.
c. Matthew 28:18-20 disciple makers and Deuteronomy 5 and 6 – Shema – teach to next generation
2. The Father’s love overflows into marvelous deeds. V20.
a. As if there was any doubt that the Father loves the Son, however, this simple statement can profoundly affect those ho either don’t have a father or had a bad father.
b. Foundational beliefs for many people, including myself, include some meaningful story about how the God of the universe still acts within his creation.
3. A major work that the Son does that the Father has given him is making the dead live. The Father honors the Son. V21
a. Reversal of the curse from Genesis.
b. Understand this in physical terms first, but also spiritual. Romans 6:6-23
c. Note: “to whom he wills” flows right into the next verse talking about the authority of judgment given to Jesus. In order to judge, one must have the ability to designate one party from another. Another way you can say it is “to whom by his will,” though it doesn’t sound like good English.
4. Authority to judge is the Father’s, however, he honors the Son by giving Him this authority. V22
a. These things the Father has done so that all will honor the Son just as they have honored the Father.
b. However, those who do not honor the Son, reject the one who sent the Son - the one whom he loves and himself honored.
2. Life in Jesus’ name.
a. The coming of Jesus was the beginning of the end.
i. In the end times, the dead will be raised and judged. Revelation 20 Daniel 12:2.
1. The OT talks about a few instances where people were raised, but as far as we can tell it was not as prevalent as during Jesus’ ministry. However, not everyone was resurrected either during Jesus’ ministry or after his resurrection.
2. Son of man – Daniel 7:13
a. Title that emphasizes the last day, the end times, judgment is coming, and king is being throned, and his kingdom is being set in an everlasting stone.
ii. The hour is here. The time is now. The imminency of the gospel is emphasized in the “here and not yet,” or “kingdom is with us now and the future glorified kingdom that is not yet realized.”
1. Would you leave your arm rotting on its bone while you continue to live your normal life. Go to work or school, eat with one hand, type with one hand, play basketball with one hand, hug with one hand (oh wait that’s the Baptist side-hug) while the other one rots. We wouldn’t do this, we would go to get it taken care of.
2. Hear, listen, obey. Give your allegiance to the King, and you will live.
a. The work isn’t done. As the father does, as the son does, so now you do because the son you abide in the son and the son abides in you. A belief, a thought, a sentiment, a mental ascent, is no saving action.
b. As the father loves the son, the son loves his bride, so his bride will show marvelous deeds so that you may marvel!
c. And Jesus said, “whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12
i. The expectation is that we will also raise the dead both physically and spiritually.
ii. Miracles Today illustration p160-161.
