you read them, you learn lessons, but you don’t do everything they do

Ex. of King David

We are to follow the examples of the good things he did

We are not to follow the examples of the bad things he did

We know which is which by the rest of the Word of God . . . context

Context will show you which Psalms are meant to show us the emotions of the author and which Psalms are for instruction.
