When we hear this parable of the weeds and the wheat, we know this parable speaks of the day of judgment, the moment we are judged by God at the end of our earthly life, we can have mixed emotions.
Some of us might be approaching this judgment with great hope of reward of faithfulness to God.
Some of us on the other end might not want to think much of that day because we’re afraid and imagine it to be dreadful.
Looking at judgment, whenever it is done, we can tend to think of it as the declaration of who is GOOD or who is BAD.
But really in breaking down this parable, in the parable of the weeds and the wheat. To tell the difference between what is good and what is bad in the field , what is wheat and what is a weed, is nearly impossible.
Why? Because you can’t really tell the difference between the weed and the wheat until the harvest time!
The specific type of weed Jesus is speaking of is a Darnel, which very likely resembles grains of wheat.
So he discourages prematurely plucking out what they thought were weeds because they might be ruining the garden plucking the wheat out with it.
So very often we are confused with what is good and who is good.
When we or someone does good things, we like to think, that person IS good.
When someone else does bad things, we CAN be quick to make the conclusion, this person is BAD.
Now there’s two things we have to note:
What we do doesn’t matter.
What we do does matter.
Every human being is created in the image and likeness of God. We are created with a unique dignity that is INDELIBLE. Meaning the value, the image, with no matter what we have done, what we’ve had DONE TO US, not what we’ve thought, not what we’ve done, not what we’ve said, can erase, eliminate, or destroy this wonderful image that God has created.
Being created like this is given to us BEFORE we’ve done or ACCOMPLISHED ANY good and STAYS with us even AFTER we’ve done the worst thing.
Something with that level of durability to withstand even the worst of sin, that stays OUT of the reach of the devil, only GOD can create.
HOWEVER, like I said before, what we do doesn’t matter. But at the same time, what we DO matters. HOW???
While our thoughts, words, and actions cannot ELIMINATE our value and dignity, what we do can bring it out and let it shine, or it can bury it!
Imagine you have a beautiful, brand new rolls royce. With how valuable the car is, the way you use it and treat it matters.
The way you choose to drive it hurt the engine or keep it alive and running.
The way you choose to service and clean it can hurt the car or cover it’s beauty.
To simply drive and use it carelessly it will hurt the car, but it’s still retains the name and brand. It’s still a Rolls Royce.
The same way, what we choose, the way we live, could hurt us, and hide our goodness, or it could bring it out and let it shine.
So in the end, what we do DOESN’T Matter because it can’t erase our value and WHO we are. At the same time, WHAT we say, think and do DOES matter because it should follow who we are.
This parable yes, is about judgment. But judgment is really not about are you good or are you bad. We know we are created good. But judgment is asking the question, who do you serve? Who are you with? Who do you belong to? Where do you stand?
Today, if you truly wish to stand with Christ Jesus, my savior, your savior, this world’s savior, he is waiting for you, waiting for your life to continue to play out so you can make the daily decision to choose well who you wish to be with. He waits for you to make this choice today and before your last breath.
Remember, what you’ve done, doesn’t matter because God see’s through it all and sees his child, but what you will do, will define WHO matters to you.
