The Second Sending

From a study of Matthew 10-28, and based on Scroggie’s 6 narrative units and the metanarrative across these units.

Mt 5 records the calling, and by Mt 10 the disciples are sent to preach the gospel of the kingdom.

What was the message at this point in their ministry?

Jesus had not yet been crucified.

What results did their preaching produce?

Where does the excitement of Lk 19(?) fit in, where the disciples rejoiced because demons were subject to them?

There was no doubt a sense of despair at Jesus’ death that the ministry of the disciples was over.

What is required of the interim period?

Purification

Conflict and resolution

Offense and forgiveness

Warning and judgment

Revelation of things to come

The Great Commission was shorter than the sending discourse, but released a power that brought the whole book of Acts within a few years, and the extent of what we’re experiencing today.

The second sending is

Concentrated

Purified through suffering

Energized by resurrection power
