The Creation of Man
The Creation of Man
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
Why is there a battle between my Flesh and the Spirit?
and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
“Formed the man of dust” - Refers to man’s body
“Breathed into his nostrils the breathe of life” - Refers to man’s spirit as it came from God
“Man became a living soul” - Refers to man’s soul when the body was quickened by the spirit
The Trichotomy of Man
The body or Soma relates to the physical realm (touch, sight, hearing, etc.).
The physical body is a literal organic informational system that allows the mind to explore and analyze the external world around us.
It provides those informational signals that allow the mind to process and construct a system that allows the human mind to gain a working knowledge for purpose of operating in the material world.
The soul or Nephesh (often viewed as mind, will, and emotions) is the seat of personal thoughts, decisions, and feelings.
The brain is the physical organ located in the head, composed of billions of neurons and synapses. It is responsible for all bodily functions, including sensory perception, movement, and processing information.
The mind is often described as the immaterial aspect of a person that involves thoughts, emotions, beliefs, consciousness, and personality. It encompasses what we experience internally—thoughts, perceptions, dreams, imagination, and self-awareness.
The spirit goes deeper, being where one's spiritual life and communion with God are centered.
Dr. Watchman Nee in the beginning of the 20th century saw the spirit as a composition made up of communion, intuition, and conscience.
1. Communion
1. Communion
Communion refers to the ability of the human spirit to connect and have fellowship with God. It is the aspect of the spirit that allows a person to experience the presence of God and engage in spiritual worship and relationship. This is often referred to as "God-consciousness", where the spirit interacts directly with the divine.
What is Communion?
Communion is the deep, personal connection with God, beyond intellectual understanding or emotional experience.
It’s the function of the spirit where a person is aware of God’s presence and can experience fellowship, worship, and communication with Him.
2. Intuition
2. Intuition
Intuition refers to the direct, inner knowing or sensing of spiritual truth. It’s not the result of reasoning, study, or logic, but a spontaneous awareness or discernment of God’s will or direction.
3. Conscience
3. Conscience
Conscience is the part of the spirit that discerns right from wrong, acting as a kind of moral compass.
The conscience is the faculty of the spirit that judges actions and decisions in the light of God's righteousness. in accordance with His commands.

An innocent spirit. Yes.
They had life (spirit), and it was an innocent life. God tells us this in Genesis 2:25: And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
An innocent soul.
The innocent soul tells us what sort of mind, emotions, and will (the work of these three equaling their heart) they had at their creation. Life in the Garden of Eden was an uncomplicated life, especially because of their innocence.
Innocence in communion with God knows no sin. An earthly body (earthsuit).
The physical components of an earthsuit are designed by God to live in the environment of earth, but not elsewhere.
The Fall
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
Isn’t it interesting how fast Adam and Eve went from innocent to guilty/lost man/sinner?
They ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (the forbidden tree for Adam and Eve). Their disobedience made them sinners. Eyes opened. They knew. They tried to cover up their sinful state. What a description of the lost soul. Their spirit had changed. Their body had not changed. But it was in their mind, emotions, will – their heart (which had also all been affected and changed at their Fall) that things really started happening differently.

Therefore, man's spirit--his faculty of communion with God--was cut off from its source of life, like a cut flower is severed from its roots.
The bonding between spirit and soul has distorted the soul's functions as well.
Herbert Lockyer noted, Man's whole being is corrupted--his spirit is darkened (Eph 4:17,18; 1 Cor 2:14);
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
His soul is debased (Jer 17:9; Eph 4:19);
The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
His body is diseased and death-ridden (Rom 7:24) . . . Sin brought a schism into man's nature, the lower dominating the higher.
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
The Soul Took Over:
Once the spirit’s direct connection with God was broken, Adam was dominated by his soul—the part of him that deals with reasoning, emotions, and self-consciousness. His mind, will, and emotions (the components of the soul) began to lead his decisions more than his spirit, which had been created to be in harmony with God.
The soul, without the guiding influence of the spirit, became susceptible to the desires of the flesh, which are often driven by self-interest and sin.
Influence of Sin:
After the fall, Adam and his descendants inherited a sinful nature (Romans 5:12), which further distorted the soul’s leadership.
The mind, will, and emotions, now influenced by sin, were inclined toward selfishness, fear, and disobedience to God’s commands.
The New Birth
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
