Psalm 22:16–18 (ESV)
16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— 17 I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
TODAY JUST A FEW OF THOSE IN M 15.....LOOKING WAY BACK HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF THE PROMISE OF JESUS TO COME
YOURE NOT HERE BY CHANCE
Mark 15:1–20 (ESV)
1 And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” 5 But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
6 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7 And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8 And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9 And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
MARK: SUFFERING SERVANT
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Isaiah 52:13–15 (ESV)
13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted. 14 As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind— 15 so shall he sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths because of him, for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand.
1ST PROMISE WE SEE FORETOLD OF JESUS’ COMING
Jesus appearance as a human servant will be UNTHINKABLE,
BUT his position as King will be UNDENIABLE!
15 and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
The Roman scourge, BOUND TO A POLE with sking stretched tightly
also called the “flagrum” or “flagellum” was a short whip made of three or more leather straps connect to a handle. From this word, we get our English word “fillet,” referring to a strip of boneless flesh or a slice of meat, which is a good description of what this weapon would do to a human body.
1 PURPOSE: SHORTEN DURATION OF CRUCIFIXTION: JEWS 40 LASHES MINUS 1
1 MEDICAL DOCTORS DESCRIPTION A MAN WOULD BECOME AN UNRECOGNIZABLE MASS OF TORN BLEEDING TISSUE FROM HEAD TO TOE.
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
Mark 15:19 (ESV)
19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.
SPITTING/HUMILIATING.....RUDE MAN AT FBALL GAME
APPEARANCE UNTHINKABLE, BUT HIS POSITION AS KING WILL BE UNDENIABLE
Isaiah 52:13 (ESV)
13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.
1 OF 4 TIMES AND EVERY OTHER TIME IT’S A DIRECT REFERENCE TO GOD HIMSELF
MOST FAMOUS ISAIAH 6 I SEE THE LORD SEATED ON THE THRONE HIGH AND LIFTED UP
THIS HORRIFYING SERVANT IS GOD!
ISN’T IT interesting how many times in MARK 15 jesus is referred to as KING?!
Mark 15:2 (ESV)
2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”
BIT MISLEADING BECAUSE IN ORIGINAL LANGUAGE IT’S A STATEMENT WITH A QUESTION IMPLIED
YOUUUU ARE THE KING OF THE JEWS......JESUS REPLIES YOUUUUU JUST SAID SO
THEN VERSES 9 AND 12 pilate refers to him twice as King of the JEws
Mark 15:9–12 (ESV)
9 And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”
then when soldiers are beating him
Mark 15:17–18 (ESV)
17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Jesus appearance as a human servant will be UNTHINKABLE,
BUT his position as King will be UNDENIABLE!
THEN NEXT GROUP OF 3 VERSES IN ISAIAH 53:1-3
Isaiah 53:1–3 (ESV)
1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
2ND PROMISES ABOUT JESUS TO COME
God will REVEAL Him,
We will REJECT Him!
3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
so prominent in Mark 15 from religious leaders to soldiers, to the crowd who just a few days before shouted HOSANNA!!!
EVEN LAST WEEK, THE DISCIPLES WHO SCATTER, AND PETER WHO HID HIS FACE IN THE FIRELIGHT, AND DENIED HIM 3X
: WE ARE PETER DENYING, THIS WE WE ARE THE SOLDIERS, PILATE, THE CROWD REJECTING
guilty participants!!!
“Until you see the cross as that which is done by you, you will never appreciate that it is done for you.” -John Stott
mark 15:
we rebel!! WE REJECT GOD’S AUTHORITY IN OUR LIFE. HIS RADICAL VIEW OF MERCY, OF LOVE, FORGIVENSS, THE WAY WE HANDLE EVERYTHING FROM MONEY TO MISSIONS, TO MOTHER IN LAWS, MIMMOSAS,GOD HAS A WAY TO RULE IN OUR LIFE THAT WE DESPISE AND REJECT
3rd promise we see
Isaiah 53:4–6 (ESV)
4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
This servant will be SLAUGHTERED,
so that we can be SAVED!
and WHY? FOR OUR GRIEFS, TO CARRY OUR SORROWS, OUR INIQUITIES
BETTER DIPICTION THAN BARABBAS
Mark 15:11–15 (ESV)
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
