Romans 8:1–2 KJV 1900
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Condemnation is a powerful, fearful word.
To be condemned is to be judged guilty, to be healed accountable for your actions.
But the Bible says in Romans that for those that are in Christ, there is NO CONDEMNATION!
Let’s look at what this means for us today.
1. Condemnation is a heavy load
We all carry this weight, it is the weight of sin!
Condemnation is not merely a feeling of guilt; it is a sentence.
In the court of God’s law, we stood guilty, condemned by our sins.
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
We all deserve punishment because sin separates us from a holy God.
It leads to death - spiritual and eternal.
Sin whispers in our ears that we are unworthy, unforgivable, and beyond hope.
It tells us that we can never measure up to God’s standards.
Many of us carry the weight of this condemnation in our hearts, allowing it to define our lives.
BUT when we are in Christ, that weight is removed!
2. Christ Takes Our Condemnation
The good news of the Gospel is that Christ Himself took our condemnation upon His shoulders. He became our substitute.
Isaiah 53:5 says, "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
Jesus went to the cross to bear the full weight of our guilt and shame.
Every sin—past, present, and future—was laid on Him.
On the cross, Christ endured the condemnation that we deserved so that we could be set free.
He did not just remove the penalty of sin; He also removed the power of condemnation.
This means that if you are in Christ, you are no longer under the judgment of sin.
The punishment has been paid.
Justice has been satisfied.
“It is finished!” Jesus declared from the cross (John 19:30).
The victory over sin and condemnation was complete.
3. Living in the Freedom of No Condemnation
Now, if we have been set free from condemnation, how should we live?
Paul tells us that "the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death." We are no longer slaves to the old way of living.
We are no longer defined by our past mistakes or our failures. In Christ, we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).
The chains of condemnation have been broken!
This freedom means that we no longer live under the fear of God's wrath.
Instead, we live under His grace, knowing that we are fully accepted and loved.
When the enemy tries to remind you of your past sins, or when guilt creeps into your heart, you can stand firm in the truth: "There is now no condemnation."
This doesn’t mean we won’t sin or make mistakes.
But when we do, we can quickly turn to Christ in repentance, knowing that His grace covers us.
As 1 John 1:9 reminds us, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
4. A Life of Confidence and Hope
Living in this freedom from condemnation brings a new confidence and hope into our lives.
We no longer strive for approval from God, because in Christ, we already have it.
We don’t have to live in fear of failure or judgment.
We are children of God, fully accepted by Him through Jesus.
This confidence allows us to serve God with joy.
It frees us to love others without fear of rejection.
We can approach God boldly in prayer, knowing that He hears us and delights in us.
Romans 8:31-34 says, "If God is for us, who can be against us? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us."
If Jesus does not condemn us, who can?
Conclusion: Embrace the Gift of No Condemnation
As we close today, I want to remind you that this promise of no condemnation is not based on how well you perform, how perfectly you live, or how sinless you are. It is based on Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross.
If you are in Christ, the burden of condemnation has been lifted. You are free. You are loved. You are forgiven. Let this truth sink into your heart today, and let it transform how you live.
For those who may not yet be in Christ, the invitation is open. Come to Jesus, and experience the freedom from guilt and shame that only He can give.
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the incredible gift of no condemnation through Christ. Help us to live in the freedom You have given us and to walk in the confidence of Your love. Let Your grace shape our lives and lead us into deeper relationship with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
