MAIN IDEA: Water-walkers receive instructions from God and respond.

Head Change: To know that in order to stand on water, you need to stand on a word from God.

Heart Change: To celebrate that God has a word for your purpose, and that word will bring peace.

Life Change: To create space in your life to hear from God.

What’s the loudest rock concert you’ve ever attended? Where on the planet have you experienced the purest silence? Do you tend to leave your phone on silent, or do you put it on the loudest possible volume setting for fear of missing a message or call?

As you watch, take note of how Jason answers these questions.
1. In times of uncertainty, why is it important to anchor significant or difficult decisions in a word from God?
Trusting in God’s word is the best anchor in times of difficulty. Jesus’ words never fail!
2. What’s the difference between a logos word and a rhema word?
Logos - the written Scripture word of God
Rhema - The Spoken Word of God
3. What stops us from hearing God’s voice?
We do not position ourselves to hear from God. We do not make room or space for God to speak.
4. What does Jason mean by ‘good options’ and ‘God options’?
Good Options - Good options are things that come up. Not necessarily God involved.
God Options - God options include God. Gods design and Word are directing the options and directions toward them.

How do we make room in our lives to hear from God?

Matthew 14:28 ESV
28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

Do you believe God has a word for you personally – for your future, your purpose, your destiny? Why, or why not? Have you experienced how a word from God can bring peace into even difficult or uncertain circumstances?

We must believe that God has a word for us personally! God has been giving words to believers throughout history and has not stopped today. God is a God of supplication and provision for His people which include words of direction as well. A word from God can bring peace to a circumstance because it is the calming voice of the Father. First and foremost we must recognize that there is a large level of comfort that comes from just the sound of His voice let alone what He has to say. Just like a small child can be easily calmed by the reminder of their parents presence. God’s word serves often as that reminder to the believer.

Do you agree that it was Jesus’ word to Peter that sustained him to walk on water?

Absolutely! Without that command Peter would have stepped into a raging see. With the Command of God he had His faith and trust in what God had confirmed him to accomplish.

Why is God’s logos word essential to living a life of water-walking faith? Why is God’s rhema word essential to living a life of water-walking faith? Which of the two do you tend to ‘hear’ more clearly? Why?

Are you listening? If not, why not? How could you position yourself better to hear God? Practically, what could you do to create margin in your life to listen for the voice of God?

What’s the difference? How do you know? Can you trace times in your life when you were faced with good options and God options? What did you pick? How do you think you might get better at distinguishing God options from good options?

Would you say your ears are tuned to God’s frequency? Do you habitually hear from Him? If so, when and where?

Are you making space in your schedule to hear from Jesus?

John 6:35 ESV
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

What promise does He attach to this declaration about Himself? Why does He call Himself bread (as opposed to caviar)? What do you feed your soul daily?

Did Jesus promise His followers an easy life? How would you describe the peace of God to a six-year-old or a sixteen-year-old?

Psalm 116 ESV
1 I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. 2 Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live. 3 The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. 4 Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!” 5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. 6 The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. 7 Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. 8 For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; 9 I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. 10 I believed, even when I spoke: “I am greatly afflicted”; 11 I said in my alarm, “All mankind are liars.” 12 What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me? 13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, 14 I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. 15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. 16 O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your maidservant. You have loosed my bonds. 17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord. 18 I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people, 19 in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!

Discuss what the psalmist says to God, what he hears from God, and how God strengthens his faith and gives him peace amidst difficult circumstances.

In Romans 10:17, Paul says, ‘Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.’ Water-walking faith that gives you the courage to step into the unknown comes from hearing God’s word to you. May God give you fresh ideas of ways to create latitude in your life to hear Him speaking to you.
Read: Meditate on 2 Timothy 3:16 and 1 John 4:1. Read these verses in the context of the chapters they’re part of. Read them in a few different Bible translations. What is God saying to you about the voices you hear and listen to? What is your ultimate source of faith-building truth?
Write: Once you’ve spent time reading your Bible, journal any ideas or impressions that come to mind. Pay attention to the thoughts that seem sharp, clear, or specific. Jot them down. What are you hearing from God? How is your faith being stirred?
Pray: If you’re wrestling with a decision, ask God to help you discern God ideas from good ideas. Pray that He would guide you with unmistakable peace and growing faith.
