Introduction

Last of David’s psalms
Introduces us to the psalms of praise that conclude the psalter
David uses many synonyms to describe the great push of this psalm, which is to praise the LORD…
extol - v. 1
bless - vv. 1, 2, 10, 21
praise - vv. 2, 3, 21
commend - v. 4
declare - vv. 4, 6
meditate - v. 5
speak - v. 6
pour forth - v. 7
sing aloud - v. 7
give thanks - v. 10
From this list we see that there are many ways for us to keep in step with the Spirit of this psalm; there are many ways for us to praise the Lord.
And like David, we have many reasons for doing so.

Major Ideas

(Psalm 145:1-7)
v. 2 - Praising His name forever and ever starts with today (cf., “Every day I will bless You...”).
v. 4 - Why would we not tell younger generations about the Lord’s mighty acts? Have we not seen His mighty acts in the word of God and in our own lives? Have you ever sat down with your children or grandchildren, with someone of a younger generations, and said to them, “Let me tell you how good God has been to me,”?
v. 5 - What makes meditating on God’s wonderful works so difficult? Meditation requires…
…discipline of mind.
…discipline of time.
(Psalm 145:8-13)
v. 9 - “The LORD is good to all...” People may be bad to us. Circumstances may be terrible. But the LORD is good to us; we know this because He is good to all.
(Psalm 145:14-16)
v. 14 - “The LORD sustains all who fall...” How is that we fall?
Sometimes we fall as we trip over something pushed in front of us.
These are circumstances beyond our control, but God will sustain us and raise us up.
Sometimes we fall as we trip over things along a sinful path that we should’ve never walked.
Although this fall was of our own making, God is still merciful and gracious. As we look to Him, He will sustain us with mercy and raise us up in grace.
v. 15 - “You give them their food in due time.” Food is a most basic need. God provides it to us in due time. The growling of our stomachs do not indicate when food is due. God does, and He will provide it when we need it.
This is true for all our needs.
Sometimes the Lord delays in the provision of a need so we learn that we need most is Him.
Paul, “I have learned to be content in all things.”
(Psalm 145:17-21)
v. 17 - He is not righteous in some things and not in others. No, He is “righteous in all His ways and kind in all His deeds.”
v. 18 - The Lord is near to all… (promise)
…to all who call on Him in truth. (caveat)
v. 19 - The Lord fulfills the desires of everyone,… (promise)
…the desires of everyone who fears Him. (caveat)
v. 20 - The Lord keeps everyone,… (promise)
…everyone who loves Him. (caveat)
