Focus Passage | John 5:24-29
“Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. “Truly, truly, I say to you, a time is coming and even now has arrived, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this; for a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come out: those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

The resurrection of dead sinner today (vv. 24-27)
There is the priority of the resurrection of the dead sinner today - ‘…Truly, truly, I say to you...’
Typically when things are stated twice, what is being said is important. This is the fact here. Jesus was speaking of the utmost important topic of one’s life, salvation. He was not speaking just about eternal life, but how to receive eternal life, has eternal life.
How does one receive eternal life?
Is eternal life something that is gained/earned or received?
Many within life are trying to earn salvation. They are striving for merits and acceptation within the world standards and this does not equate salvation. What does this benefit them? It does not benefit them at all. As Jesus states...
For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
There is the prerequisite of the resurrection of the dead sinner today
Jesus states that there is a way to receive salvation. He states two keys that are involved in this reception.
A person must hear the Word - ‘…the one who hears my word...’
As Jesus continues to expand on this truth in v. 25...
“Truly, truly, I say to you, a time is coming and even now has arrived, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
This is why it is of utmost importance for us to share the gospel. This is why there is a Great Commission statement within all Four Gospels and the Book of Acts. This is why Paul tells the church at Corinth that we are ambassadors for Christ. This is why Paul also writes to the church at Rome...
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
A person must heed the Word - ‘…and believes Him who sent Me...’
To heed the word is to accept the Word. It is to accept Christ as Lord. It is to accept the eternal life that the Father has given Christ the authority to give, so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself (v. 26).
There is the product of the dead sinner today - ‘…has eternal life...’
The provided product
Romans 6:23b (NASB 2020)
...but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we did in righteousness, but in accordance with His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
b. The protected product - ‘…eternal...’
The word eternal within the Gk is the word, ‘aionios,’ and is defined as an ‘unlimited amount of of time,’ or ‘perpetual.’ It is the same Gk word that is used to describe the ‘eternal power and divine nature’ of God in Romans 1:20. It is again the same Gk word that us used by Paul Romans 16:26, when he writes ‘of the eternal God.’ The gift of God, salvation, received by the sinner that brings them to a new life in Christ, is eternal. It is protected, secured. Paul further explains to the church at Ephesus that one’s salvation is protected, sealed by the Holy Spirit.
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise, who is a first installment of our inheritance, in regard to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
The resurrection unto life (vv. 28-29a)
John 5:28–29a (NASB 2020)
Do not be amazed at this; for a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
and will come out: those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life...
The resurrection unto life is the first resurrection of two resurrections spoken of in the Scripture (1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor 15:51-58)
The resurrection unto life is for the redeemed of the Lord following the order of His resurrection
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,
The resurrection unto life is the hope of the redeemed
For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ only in this life, we are of all people most to be pitied.
The resurrection of damnation (v. 29b)
The resurrection of damnation (v. 29b)
John 5:29 (NASB 2020)
...those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
The resurrection of damnation is the resurrection unto death
Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
The resurrection of damnation is the Great White Throne Judgment of Christ
Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one of them according to their deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
The resurrection of damnation is the result of one rejecting Christ as Lord
The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Conclusion |
We will all face one of two end points: Heaven or Hell. We all face the resurrection. We will either face a resurrection of life or death.
