Opening: Different types of conversations with with the same person. Wanting/needing something, encouragement, and relationship building.
Body: Prayer is a conversation that can take many forms. Primarily 3 forms of prayer.
We see all 3 in the model prayer Jesus gives us.
Request- Matt 6:11
Give us today the food we need,
God wants us to come to Him with our needs. Phil 4:6-7
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
2. Reverence- Matt 6:9
Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
It is vital for us to remember who God is and who we are.
There is only 1 God, and it’s not you.
Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.
How joyful are those who fear the Lord—
all who follow his ways!
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
3. Relationship- Matt 6:9
Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
Pray can simply be communion or communicating with your Heavenly Father. Nothing more nothing less.
There is a 4th type of prayers. We talked about them a little last week when we were discussing being honest with God.
4. Revenge
These are prayers people are uncomfortable praying or hearing. Sometimes they are honest prayers for where you are. But they can also be us crying out for God’s justice.
For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Do Not Destroy!”
Justice—do you rulers know the meaning of the word?
Do you judge the people fairly?
No! You plot injustice in your hearts.
You spread violence throughout the land.
These wicked people are born sinners;
even from birth they have lied and gone their own way.
They spit venom like deadly snakes;
they are like cobras that refuse to listen,
ignoring the tunes of the snake charmers,
no matter how skillfully they play.
Break off their fangs, O God!
Smash the jaws of these lions, O Lord!
May they disappear like water into thirsty ground.
Make their weapons useless in their hands.
May they be like snails that dissolve into slime,
like a stillborn child who will never see the sun.
God will sweep them away, both young and old,
faster than a pot heats over burning thorns.
The godly will rejoice when they see injustice avenged.
They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked.
Then at last everyone will say,
“There truly is a reward for those who live for God;
surely there is a God who judges justly here on earth.”
David had the power and authority to do this. What makes this prayer so powerful is that he could, but he didn’t. He trusted God’s judgement over his own. He had a complaint and took it to God instead of handling it on his own.
In case you think this is just OT believers….
Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed.
When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of all who had been martyred for the word of God and for being faithful in their testimony. They shouted to the Lord and said, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you judge the people who belong to this world and avenge our blood for what they have done to us?”
“God, this is what I want you to do to them. Nevertheless, your will be done.” Pouring out your complaint and allowing God to judge. It’s not our place to dole out wrath and punishment.
Something we must remember is that all of this, prayer, starts with coming to God as our Heavenly Father.
Why does this matter?
Father’s are capable to make change happen
Father’s are compassionate towards their families
Father’s are courageous.
Capable- Men are capable of great things. More capable than any of us realize. Father’s are known for doing some amazing things to protect and provide for their family. When your children come to ask for something, they are coming expecting you to be capable of fulfilling their request.
Compassionate- Men are compassionate creatures. It may only be towards 1 person, but we do feel compassion. Jesus healed people when He was moved with compassion
Courageous- Men will do courageous, and sometimes foolish, things. Fighting a bear. Men will take risks for the ones they love.
Set up- Have fathers, husbands pray over/with families. Adopt if someone is alone.
