Introduction

12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:1–2 ESV

I appeal to you therefore, brothers,

or brothers and sisters. note the inportance of manuscrips.
anytime i see a "therefore" I like to go back and see what it is there for. Romans 12 i think this points back to the theology that Paul has been arguing for in chapters 1-11
ibles, 2016), Ro 12:1–2.

Context Matters

Romans 12:1–2 (ESV)
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans starts with Paul saying hes unashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God for salvation. He then spells out the results of justification by faith in terms of both present experience and future hope (5:1–8:39). In the next three chapters, he expresses his sorrow that many of his fellow Israelites have not embraced the gospel, and he wrestles with the theological implications of this (chs. 9–11). He concludes by describing how the gospel should affect one’s everyday life (chs. 12–16). Paul wrote his letter to Rome in about a.d. 57.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Ro.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

note that the righteous will live by faith.
he then argues that men are without excuse for their suppression of the truth.

12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God

Original Sin

Original sin is the doctrine that, as a result of Adam’s fall, all mankind are sinners by nature, having a propensity to sin that underlies every actual sin.
a lot o teachers deny this.
none are righteous

9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written:

“None is righteous, no, not one;

11  no one understands;

no one seeks for God.

12  All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;

no one does good,

not even one.”

9  The heart is deceitful above all things,

and desperately sick;

who can understand it?

10  “I the LORD search the heart

and test the mind,

to give every man according to his ways,

according to the fruit of his deeds.”

Its our Heart that are the problem.

What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Peace With God Through Faith.

5 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

New creation In Christ

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Ezekiel 36:26 ESV
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Salvation is a Work of God

we cant brag or boast, we add nothing to our salvation except the sin that made it necessary

15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
In Romans 9 we see God is sovereign over salvation.

Spiritual worship

presenting our bodies as Spiritual(or reasonable service) is the logical conclusion of the mercies of God. its the thing we are saved to not saved by.

6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

John 4:24 ESV
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
its always been through faith.

But I Miss the mark

We all Do, we all struggle to not conform, we all struggle to preset our bodies, we don’t get set free from sin in this life. remember paul in chaper 7

14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

A perfect Sacrifice

Isaiah 53:5–7 “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.”
John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Romans 3:25–26 “whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

Who we are in christ

we have to know who we are in christ to move forward
mercy, it is He who sits on the mercy seat, it is Christ our saviour. to him be the glory forever amen,.
it is he who is our hope.
New
Forgiven
Redeemed
5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Tt 3:5.
17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Heb 2:17–18.
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), 1 Pe 1:3–5.

Get it right

If we are saved by grace through faith we cant brag or boast, we don't deserve mercy but Christ offers it. we don't work to get right with God like other faiths, we are made new by our saviour and given works to join Him in His mission.
let us live in light of his mercy, let us offer ourselves to him in service, and not conform to this world bust be transformed by the renwing of the mind.

summery

so if we are to preset our bodies to God and not be conformed to this world let us not forget that its done by the mercy of God

Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought word and deed, by what we have done and what we have left undone, we have not loved you with our whole heart, we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves, we are truly sorry and we humbly repent, for the sake of your son Jesu Christ have mercy on us and forgive us that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your name forever amen.
