Jesus the Son of God
The Gospel of Mark 1
Today we are beginning a new series on the book of Mark
Months ago meeting and praying with the pastors from Living Stones and Pastor Barney from Life water church we decided to do a new series together on the Gospel of Mark
We are praying for a greater revelation and deeper understanding of Jesus as we walk together through the Gospel of Mark.
Is the Smallest of the gospels
Mark shows that through healing, teaching, and ultimately, His crucifixion, Jesus embodies the characteristics of the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. Mark's deliberate portrayal underscores the theological significance of Jesus' servanthood, as He willingly endured rejection and suffering for the redemption of others.
We have 4 gospels 4 view points
In harmony
Telling the same story in different ways
Matthew
The Gospel of Matthew is aimed primarily at the Jews, the person familiar with the Old Testament. Jesus is portrayed as Israel’s Messiah, the King of the Jews.
Mark
His audience is basically those people in the Roman Empire who are unfamiliar with the religion of the Jews.
Luke
His portrayal of Jesus is as the perfect man. Hence, he focuses on those events in Jesus’ life that stress His humanity. The Greeks in their art and literature were always looking for the perfect man. The Gospel of Luke reveals that man.
John
The things he recorded were for the purpose of establishing the fact that Jesus was the eternal God who became a man. John wanted his readers to exercise faith toward Jesus.
Despite the Gospel of Matthew being the first book in the New Testament, the majority view today is that Mark was actually the first gospel, followed by Matthew and then Luke.
Mathew Mark Luke and John were written by men inspired by the Holy Spirit with 4 different views, like a movie with different cameras same scenes 4 takes.
Mathew’s Jesus the sovereign
Mark more interested in what Jesus did
Mark was not an apostle, he was born around 15 years after Jesus, he was a teenager when all the key things were happening around Jesus ministry.
Historians and scholars believed that Mark was the unnamed young man that ran from the garden, the night jesus was arrested
Mar 14:50 And they all left him and fled.
Mar 14:51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,
Mar 14:52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
It is believed that though Mark wrote this book, but it was the testimony of the apostle Peter, Mark was led to Christ by Peter, he was a disciple of Peter, yes the church met at his mothers house in Jerusalem, according to early church Historians.
Peter had to tell him about many of the accounts specially when Peter denied Jesus, Mark was not there.
many of the early historians, Eusebius of Caesarea , Clement, Justin Martyr, wrote about that.
His name was John Marcus he went by Mark
In Acts 12 people were meeting in John Mark’s mothers house, apparently a wealthy lady.
Rhoda the servant answers the door and kept Peter outside waiting, they couldn’t believe that their prayers were answered.
Let’s pray
This is How Mark introduces Jesus
1 The Son of God
1 The Son of God
Mar 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Mark different than the other gospels, began by introducing Jesus as the son of God, he left out the genealogies. He focus on what Jesus did the servant King.
We need a fresh revelation of Jesus as servant King
Ex I remember many years ago, I was in a meeting in Rio Joy Dawson was speaking thousands of people around and she prayed for us to have a revelation of Jesus.
Immediately I had this vivid vision, I was in this court yard of a medieval prison and Jesus walked in and put His arms around me and comforted me He was leading me out.
I was young and recently saved, I needed a friend who was willing to help me and love me, and that’s how Jesus showed up, humble as servant of sinners.
Back then I could not handle a father figure, I was too wounded for that, Jesus came to set me free.
The Gospel the good news
The word gospel means good news, and it is a term used to define the written accounts of Jesus of Nazareth in the New Testament.
2 The Messenger , John the Baptist
2 The Messenger , John the Baptist
Mar 1:2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,
Mar 1:3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”
Mark was connecting John to this passage in Isaiah,
Isa 40:3 A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Isa 40:4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.
Isa 40:5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
Mark introduces John the Baptist as the voice crying in the wilderness but gives no details about him. He looked like Elijah, that’s why they asked him, if he was Elijah.
Jesus said John the Baptist was the greatest man ever born
Luk 7:28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
We know through the gospel of Luke the physician, that he was the miracle child of Zachariah the priest, and Elizabeth, and that Gabriel came to Zachariah and gave him the good news about his birth, John the Baptist was Jesus cousin.
After Gabriel the archangel, visits Mary announcing the birth of Jesus. Mary goes to visit Elizabeth.
Luk 1:39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah,
Luk 1:40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
Luk 1:41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Unless you have being filled with the Holy Spirit you have no idea what I’m talking about.
Luk 1:42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
Let’s go back to Mark
John’s Baptism
Mar 1:4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Mar 1:5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
John was anointed and filled with the Holy Spirit from the time he was in the womb of his mother.
Gabriel told his father Zachariah
Luk 1:15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
Luk 1:16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God,
Luk 1:17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”
Mar 1:6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.
He probably took a Nazarite vow
Abstinence for a specific amount of time, usually 30 days, where the person undertakes 3 kinds of prohibition not drinking wine or alcohol not eating anything derived from grapes. Not cutting their hair and avoiding contact with dead.
Baptism was not invented by John the Baptist or Jesus is and old part of Judaism
When some one wanted to become a Jew there was 3 things they needed to do.
1 He had to go under a scribe to be taught the law
2 Circumcision if he was a male he had to be circumcised
3 Immersed in the water, baptized
John was baptizing Jews, calling them to prepare the way , calling them into repentance.
Mar 1:7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
I’m not worthy to be his slave
3 Jesus the Son of God approved by the Father and the Holy Spirit.
3 Jesus the Son of God approved by the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Mar 1:8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Jesus is very clear about our relationship with Him
In
Joh 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
When we accept this invitation then we need to follow up
Act 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Repent be baptize and receive the Holy Spirit
Without repentance we cannot be forgiven, after we repent and forgive those who sinned against us, we can receive the Holy Spirit by faith. If you have not received the Holy Spirit ask someone who has the Holy Spirit ,to lay hands on you and pray for you.
The Pharisees and scribes were shocked that John was baptizing Jews, because they didn’t need to converted into anything, John was calling them into purification repent and be baptized. prepare the way of the Lord
The Baptism of Jesus
Mar 1:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Jesus didn’t need to be baptized, he didn’t sin, He was just being obedient .
Mar 1:10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
Father, son and Holy Spirit were present at the baptism of Jesus
And they are present on your baptism, if you are not baptized yet just call the office and set a time, Cristal is on vacation I will call you back.
Mar 1:11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
The Temptation of Jesus
Mar 1:12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
Mar 1:13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
Jesus the son of God
A servant King
His messenger was John the Baptist, he baptize Jesus
Father Son and the Holy Spirit together at Jesus Baptism
Have you made Jesus the Lord of our lives ?
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Joh 3:16
To receive Jesus we need to accept Him as God’s son,
we need to repent from our sins and a life of selfishness,
ask Him to be your Lord and savior, not that we deserve it, but is a gift from God.
If this is your desire today, please repeat this prayer after me?
Heavenly Father
I’m sinner,
I’m sorry for my sins, I repent of my sins
I’m willing to turn away from my sins.
I receive Christ as my savior,
I confess Him as Lord
And from this moment on, I want to follow and serve Him,
in the fellowship of His church,
In Jesus name,
Amen!
1Co 11:23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
1Co 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke itand said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
1Co 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
1Co 11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.
1Co 11:27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
Heb 9:14 dead works, acts, sins
E mau aku ka loko maika’i o ka Haku, Iesu Kristo; me ke aloha a ke Akua, a me ka launa pu ‘ana mai o ka Uhane Hemolele ia ‘olua, a me makou apau. Amene.
Luke 7:29,30
