What Sin Is
What Sin Is
Because of sin, we don’t live the lives we were originally designed to live, and we don’t live in the world we were originally designed to live in.
Sin has disrupted the image of God inside of of.
The story of the Human race, as presented in the Bible, is the story of God fixing broken people living in a broken world.
What is sin?
Sin: any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude, or nature.
What is God’s moral law?
And God spoke all these words, saying,
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
What does it mean that sin is also found in our nature?
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
God is eternally good. He never breaks His own moral law.
Anything that is contrary to His moral law is contrary to His character… God Himself.
God therefore hates sin because it contradicts everything he is.
Where Sin Came From
Where Sin Came From
“The Rock, his work is perfect,
for all his ways are justice.
A God of faithfulness and without iniquity,
just and upright is he.
Sin did not come from God. We can’t blame God. His work is perfect.
God cannot even desire wrong.
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
If God is sovereign over everything, then how is He not responsible for sin?
It seems that God did ordain sin into the world.
Sin did not surprise God when it came into the world, nor did it overpower Him. Instead, He decided to let man willingly choose sin.
The full understanding is not to be discovered on this side of Heaven.
Recall the fall.
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
As a result, Adam became full of sin and it became natural to him.
This is how sin becomes an inherited sin.
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
That’s why Paul says the following…
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
The wicked are estranged from the womb;
they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
Although our inherited sin doesn’t always mean we are as bad as we could be, it does mean that we can do nothing to please God.
We lack the ability to do anything that is spiritual good.
There is a clear difference between what the world claims is of good and what is of God.
We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
How Sin Affects Us
How Sin Affects Us
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Just as God doesn’t bring the penalty of death to Adam and Eve immediately, He does the same to us.
As Believers…
While sin does not affect our status or standing before God, it does effect our fellowship with God.
God is grieved by our sin.
Sin also effects our relationship With others.
Should Christian keep on sinning?
No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
What do we do when we do sin?
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
