Peter was wrong to go fishing… that his faith was compromised by going back to his former occupation
Peter & the others were uncertain on what to do next… contrasts with their zeal & purpose at Pentecost
OR… it could well be that they just went fishing!
A warning about exegesis… don’t look too far in where you’re blinded by a thought or phrase to the whole context of a passage
They caught nothing:
As a fisherman, you have to expect some disappointments… skunked
It’s worse when you rely on those fish for food
But I think a picture comes to light of the Christian today… who labors and toils to fish for men with the gospel!
We shouldn’t be disappointed… because by faith and prayer we shall be with Christ in the last day
Jesus showed up at WORK!
He is interested in all of their lives, not just in worship
Peter:
John 1:42 “42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).”
Matthew 26:33 “33 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.””
Jesus’ 1&2 time: agapas (unselfish, all-giving, uncaused love)
Peter responds: phileo (brotherly/friendly love)
Jesus’ 3rd time: phileis (brotherly love)
When we fall short… it’s reasonable to think that God would ask us: “Are you sorry for what you’ve done? … Will you promise never to do that again?”
Yet Jesus challenged Peter to LOVE.
Our repentance, our obedience, our conduct STEMS… from a love of God
