Reflection Paper 2 – Why was the resurrection of Jesus necessary for salvation?
The two things that I can think of without researching this topic more would be that Jesus had to resurrect for two reasons.
The first reason is an indirect line of thinking. God intended that Jesus die for the salvation of God’s people. So in some aspect, God died. For God to be God, He could not stay eternally dead. Resurrection, then, is the competion of God’s plan. Paul shows in
1 Corinthians 15:17–19 ESV
17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
that the story of redemption is not complete until Christ is raised back from the dead.
The second reason is to fulfill scripture. In 1 Corinthians 15:4
1 Corinthians 15:4 ESV
4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Paul mentions that the reserruciton is according to scripture. This is no place for a long exposition, but a few passages i found that might point to this is
Psalm 16:10 ESV
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
Isaiah 53:10 ESV
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Daniel 12:2–3 ESV
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.
