Do you ever think man this is really nice?
Read Psalm 8
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David.
1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
A Prayer of adoration
A beauty of the psalms is we can go from dread and concern to praise and adoration
Sometimes we need to lament to God
We need to complain to vent to God
We need to just say things a pretty terrible and its hard for me to see your greatness yet I will cling to the truth
Other times we can look at our lives and think man God is so good
Thats where we are in this psalm
Back to the question earlier man this is really nice
Well if we pray when life is hard
Which we should
Never think your life is too much of a burden for God
Pray to him when life is hard
But also when life is good
Look at what david says here
1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
I get the sense of David in complete awe of God
In fact he starts by exclaiming the name of God
How majestic in all the earth
The earth is filled with many amazing indescrible things
How many of you have seen a beautiful sunset and take a picture only to realize the picture didnt do it justice?
Then you describe it and your friends are like cooool
This is what david is saying
How majestic in all the earth
How amazing
How much greater than everything here and in the heavens
David says this wonder can only be uttered out of the mouth babes and infants
How many of you said your dad could lift up your entire house when you were little
as Children we can have the awe and wonder David is speaking of here
Really its maybe a better understanding of who God is because its not limited by what we think is possible
In fact the praise of these babies and infants are greater than the scoffs of those who hate God
This is how David start s his prayer of exultation of God
Poetic yet exclaimatory
He is striving to express the majesty of God using a finite language
This is the exclaimation of how great our God is
This is how we pray in honor of who God is
David goes on to continue to marvel at who God is in his creation
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
Daivd marvels not only at who God is but also at what he has made
This is why i ask you the question when is a time where you just look and say man this nice
Because its one thing for us to know and exclaim God’s greatness
We can do that even in the times we are struggling
Sometimes we feel the weight of God’s greatness and our falleness
We think I can never be good enough
But that is not quite where David is at
David is sitting in awe of God
All around him he sees God’s goodness
This question what is man that you are mindful of him
How awesome that this great majestic God cares for man for his creation
Shouldnt you be doing greater things
Like creating
When life is good sometimes we just have to pause and say wow God you are so great and that you would still care enough for me that you would give good gifts to me
Wow let me just sit in this
We can pray Psalm 8:1-4
1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
And pause and just soak in his glory and majesty
Then we can pick up again
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
What is man that you care for us
but even more that you would see us worthy of glory and honor
That you would give him dominion over your creation
We dont hand over control to people we dont trust
Vacation this week Lee is here
This is our good God
That he cares for us
He trust us with his creation
Man this is truely a God who is so so good to me
This God would condescend himself to us
He would give us glory and honor dominion over his creation
We played no part yet he would trust us to keep it
The only way to end this
9 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Questions
Have you had a time where you were really able to see the majesty of God?
How did you respond?
How can we look at this psalm now in light of the coming of Jesus Christ?
Use John 1:1-5 and John 1:14
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
How can we use a psalm like this when we are having a hard time or struggling with who God is?
