INTRODUCTION: Longest day? Christmas eve. (maybe story)....We are waiting for the baby..Is it here yet!? (move one of these to the middle.)
TENSION: One of the hardest things to do is wait. Whether it is waiting on a good thing or bad. Sometimes the hardest waiting is waiting on the bad news to come.
John 7:1 ESV
1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.
After this - 5-7 months later.
Galilee - North where Nazareth was
Judea - South where Jerusalem.
Show map?
Jews - Jewish leadership. Washington DC.
Kill him - What has he done? Nothing but good.
John 7:2–3 ESV
2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
Feasts of booths - Tabernacles or tents. Fall Festival that all Jewish men were supposed to go down and celebrate in Jerusalem.
Split into 3 sections, before today, during next week, and afterwards.
A reminder that God provided for this in the wilderness. Set up tents, feasts. Most similar to Thanksgiving.
brothers - his physical brothers. He had other brothers and sisters.
Mark 6:3 “3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.”
John 7:4 ESV
4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”
CONCLUSION: James story

God’s timing is always best.

So we must:

Wait

Trust

John 7:1–2 ESV
1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.
After this - all the stuff in chapter 6 (recap). Several months later.
Galilee - The northern part.
Why? Judea was where the Jewish leadership was and they wanted to kill him.
You might have people that don’t like you, but hopefully not to kill you.
Jewish feats of booths - Feast of tabernacles. It was now in the fall. A feast that celebrated their provision in the wilderness and the coming Kingdom.
All Jewish men were supposed to go down to Jerusalem.
John 7:3–5 ESV
3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him.
brothers - his physical brothers.
Despite what the catholic church says, Jesus had brothers.
Leave here - Galilee
Judea - Jerusalem.
disciples - followers
See you are doing -
If you want to be known, why are you still in hiding. - But people were trying to kill him.
John 7:5 “5 For not even his brothers believed in him.” - His brothers did not believe him. If you were making this story up, why would you put this in there.
After last week we saw everyone walked away, not even his family. Matthew says taht he was brothers and sisters and they thought he was crazy.
John 7:6–8 ESV
6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”
My time - or season.
has not yet come. - IT was not his time to be crucified yet, he still had work to do.
But your time is always here - ???????????
The world cannot hate you -?????????????
but it hates me - why? Becuase he told him you are evil.
You go up to the feast -
I am not going up - Some add in “yet”, but he wasn’t ready to make his grand entrance as the king like on palm sunday.
John 7:9–10 ESV
9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee. 10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
So they leave, he stays, then he leaves. - Did Jesus lie? (ill when I came home early from college??). Because if he lied, he’s not holy and not God.
in private -
John 7:11–13 ESV
11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
He is a good man -
No he is leading the people atray - Some liked him, some don’t. Who was saved in that group? Likely no one. It doesn’t matter if you think he is a good guy or not. Still doesnt’ save you.
CONCLUSION - James death, Jude and James start of the book
Matthew 13:55–56 “55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?””
Acts 1:14 “14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.”
1 Corinthians 15:7 “7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”
Galatians 1:19 “19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother.”
James 1:1 “1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings.”
