Restate
We as image bearers of God are not allowed to make up our own gods, we cannot just worship whatever we want, however we want. We were made to worship the one true God and we have to worship as He commands (HAVE THEM ANSWER QUESTION 4). God is jealous over our worship. We must worship in spirit and truth.
Ask if anyone has questions then define terminology
Definitions and Examples for Key Terms
Idol Definition: An idol is any thing that people worship or devote themselves to - worship only belongs to God. Example: A statue, picture, or even something in life (like money or fame) that someone relies on or worships instead of God. Cross-Reference: 1 John 5:21 “Little children, guard yourselves from idols.”
Worship Definition: Worship means showing reverence, fear and adoration to God. Worship involves obeying God, praying to Him, and living according to His commands as found in Scripture. Example: Worship can be singing songs in church, praying, reading the Bible, and living a life that honors God’s will. Cross-Reference: John 4:24 ““God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””
Proper Worship Definition: Worshipping God in the way He has commanded, without adding personal or cultural practices that contradict Scripture. Example: Observing practices like prayer and reading the Bible as instructed by God, rather than making up new ways to honor Him that aren't in Scripture. Cross-Reference: Deuteronomy 12:32 ““Whatever I am commanding you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.”
Forbid Definition: To forbid means to command against or not allow something. Example: The second commandment forbids worshiping anything other than God, such as idols or images. Cross-Reference: Exodus 20:3 ““You shall have no other gods before Me.”
God's Jealousy Definition: When God is described as jealous, it means He is deeply protective of His relationship with His people and does not tolerate worship being given to anyone or anything else. Example: Just like a parent who doesn’t want to share their love and care with a stranger, God doesn’t want us to give our worship to idols. Cross-Reference: Deuteronomy 4:24 ““For Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”
Questions for them to answer
Does this mean that people that have pictures of Jesus in their house are breaking God’s Law?
Yes, actually it does. God has commanded that we do not make an image of Him. Not for children’s Bibles, not for TV Series like “The Chosen” Deuteronomy 4:15 ““So keep your souls very carefully, since you did not see any form on the day Yahweh spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire,”
Why might some people will call this command “legalism,"
Perhaps it is because they do not want to obey God, or it will be difficult to do so because it may make them look strange
Perhaps it is because they think that in doing this we can earn salvation - which we know we can’t
God desires that we worship Him in spirit and in truth and to the degree that we twist that we disobey His second command
