What do I believe God wants us to know? We can pray for God to deliver us from temptation and we can fight temptation with the Sword/Word
Why? We all want victory over temptation
What do I believe God wants us to do? Pray, follow, flew, and fight temptation
Why? We all want victory over temptation
ME/wE
One of our greatest desires whether you are believer, skeptic, or critic is to get victory against our temptations.
You want to stand tall and the temptations to fall.
you don’t want the opposite your temptations to stand tall in victory over you
SUCH A BIG DESIRE for some of us some of us our FRUSTRATIONS in life is not getting victory over our TEMPTATIONS or some of greatest regrets are tied to a temptation we gave into.
Romans 7:15 ESV
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
I WANT TO BE VICTORIOUS
nobody says over the long term “I am happy I did that!”
IT GIVES SHORT TERM PROMISES
Before we move on let’s define what a temptation is…..What is a temptation again? What is mean to be tempted or temp?
-WHEN SOMEONE of SOMETHING (the world, flesh, enemy) tries to get someone to do wrong, against God’s law, sinful, illegal,
Lie
Lust
Cheat
Cut corners
Use foul language
Puff yourself full of prideful
DO THINGS YOUR OWN WAY
SHORT TERM
We see this in
1 John 2:16 ESV
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
WHY WOULD WE DO THESE THESE THINGS? THE ENEMY IS CRAFTY
I CAME TO YOU AND SAID, GO LIE TO YOUR FRIEND, YOU WILL SAY NO
Genesis 3:1 ESV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
JUST CHEAT, LIE, CURSE, LUST FOR A MOMENT…YOU WILL GET THIS REWARD
IT IS LIKE A BAIT ON A HOOK
and the temptation with a promise of reward.
if you lie you will look good but if you tell the truth they might not like you
if you lust it will fulfill your desires
if you use cheat you can get ahead
if do THINGS YOUR OWN WAY YOU WILL BE HAPPIER
JUST DO IT FOR A LITTLE WHILE and look what you get…just disobey for a moment…but the problem is it leads to destruction eventually
HERE IS THE PROBLEM….TEMPTATION WHEN GIVEN INTO LEADS TO DEATH….
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
James 1:13–15 ESV
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
It not might not happen immediately… What you sow in one season you reap in a different season
Galatians 6:7–9 ESV
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
WHAT IS AFFECTS IS YOUR
Faith: confidence in God
Fiances: you lie at work and get caught
Family and friendships: they find out you have been doning __
Future
SOME OF YOU KNOW THIS
PERSONAL OR EXPERIENCED THIS
SOMEONE GAVE INTO A TEMPTATION AND IT TORE APART YOUR FAMILY, SOMEONE GOT CAUGHT CHEATING AND THEY LOST FINANCES.
We know this from personal experience
WHAT DO WE DO? HOW DO WE GET VICTORY OVER OUR TEMPTATIONS?
JESUS WANTS YOU TO HAVE VICTORY
HOW? How do we get victory?
We are going to learn WE get victory when we PRAY, FOLLOW, FLEE, FIGHT
WE SEE IN THE LORD’S PRAYER JESUS SAYS PRAY FOR YOU NOT TO BE EVEN TEMPTED
Pray WE don’t get tempted US US
Matthew 6:13 ESV
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Jesus knows we can be fickle, Jesus knows the influence of temptation and
Jesus says pray that you do not get tempted or when you get tempted for Him to lead you out.
God will PROTECT and DELIVER US FROM TEMPTATION
HOW?
HE WILL DO IT SUPPER NATURALLY LIKE WE DO WITH OUR KIDS
Tempted to look at things or say things on social media if they don’t have social media
Other times he will provide a way out
1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
I have had times in my life when I was tempted to do something and THE INTERNET STOPS WORKING, THE CREDIT CARD STOPS WORKING, YOUR GOOD FRIEND SHOWS UP (what are you doing
FOLLOW ME
you cannot go there with them
don’t date them
don’t go to the bar
don’t have a computer or smart phone
1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
3. SOMETIMES THE TEMPTATION IS A STRONG FOLLOW OF FLEE
1 Corinthians 6:18 ESV
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
Sometimes you needs your running shoes on
You got to go….danger…yes it might be awkward....
I would give in….I would do ___
4. Fight
Fight with what? SWORD of the Spirit
This Jesus does when He fights temptatoin
Matthew 4:1–3 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
Jesus is tempted and we are not
Tempter says, meet this legitimate need you have in an illegitimate way
Come on Jesus you are hungry! Meet it!
You deserve it!
What does Jesus do? He pulls out the Sword in Deut 8:3 Matt 4:4
Matthew 4:4 ESV
But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Matthew 4:5–6 ESV
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
Enemy goes you want to use scripture…I will use scripture too…
Presume or assume upon God
I do whatever I want and God will protect me
Romans 6:1 ESV
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
What does Jesus say
He corrects the enemy
Matthew 4:7 ESV
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
Matthew 4:8–9 ESV
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
Cut corners….just worship me
How often have we done that?
Jesus again says
Matthew 4:10–11 ESV
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
