22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”
They said to Him, “We are able.”
23 So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.”
Are you willing to put up with the shame and the
What are you willing to sacrifice to get there
I wonder if Jesus saw right then and there the deaths of these two men
James and John would share His sufferings even to the point of death but not in a redemptive sense.
James was the first apostle to be martyred (Acts 12:2)
John endured many years of persecution and exile
Maybe the worst persecution he could’ve faced
“You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with”
James and John sought a position of honor and authority next to Jesus,
But instead they were granted positions of suffering
Do we want to be baptized?:
The word Baptism was never used a religious term till the early church
Baptism is Bap-tid-zo:
to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)
to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe
to overwhelm
Used in a few different instances:
Dipping bread in oil- change the taste
Dying cloth- Change the look
Sinking Ship - You were in the water, now it’s in you
Do you want to be overwhelmed by Him?
Nothing about on you, about you or in you can look the same
It was pride that caused James and John to seek their own exaltation,
and it was pride that caused the other disciples to be upset over this
25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
God’s kingdom operates opposite of this world’s system.
Carnal rulers lord it over the people they lead or rule.
But in God’s kingdom, the great have the attitude of a servant
This English word “minister” comes from the Greek word “DIAKONOS,” which is the word we get “deacon” from.
It means to be a waiter. If we truly want to be great in God’s kingdom, we have to serve others.
