So leading Up to this Point we got to closely examine the Life of King Saul
A man that started out as a great leader who was filled with the Holy spirit
His reign did not last very long
He became deranged, prideful , arrogant and actually stupid as His reign went on
He was a Leader that was unfit to lead
he was a poor example tho the men and women who served under him
Now some time after Saul took over the nation of Israel as King , he started to fall
from chapter 13 to chapter the end of ch 13 Saul had already become disobedient to the Lord and His commands
His Kingdom ended as fast as it started
His position as King got to his head ! His pride got to His head
His heart had become detached from the Lord
1 Samuel 13:13–14“13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.””
So again Saul Had become disobedient to the Lord,
We have all heard the statement “There is consequence to Sin”
So very early on its clear that Saul Had his own agenda and we can kinda see that he’s a self serving King
but this self seeking agenda bites him in the but and it leads us into 2nd Samuel where we get deeper into the death of Saul
but before we read that I want us to go back to chapter 15
there are a couple of things id like to point out
Pay attention to the group of people that the Lord commands Saul to wipe out
and pay attention to how Saul Handles the command he is given
1 Samuel 15 (NKJV)
1 Samuel also said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the Lord.
2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt.
3 Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”
4 So Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.
6 Then Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7 And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from Havilah all the way to Shur, which is east of Egypt.
8 He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.
10 Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying,
11 “I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments.” And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night.
12 So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul went to Carmel, and indeed, he set up a monument for himself; and he has gone on around, passed by, and gone down to Gilgal.”
13 Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed are you of the Lord! I have performed the commandment of the Lord.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”
15 And Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the Lord your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.”
16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.” And he said to him, “Speak on.”
17 So Samuel said, “When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel?
18 Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’
19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do evil in the sight of the Lord?”
20 And Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
22 So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.”
So these 23 verses we read of Saul’s Disobedience to the Lord
Instead of Killing and wiping out everything that had to do with the Amalekite nation, He spares the King and takes all the best animals for food and sacrifice
He completely disobeys the Lord
He was given this command because the Amalekites were a people that constantly when after the nation of Israel
they would attack the back of the pack as the People of Israel were coming out of Egypt
they would plunder and kill women and children
they were a real problem (Exodus CH 17) vs 8-16
Again the Amalekites were an issue and God promised to wipe them out
Part of His plan was to use King Saul , but Saul disobeyed
What Saul failed to realize is that partial obedience is disobedience and his justification was not justified
Now remember this was the Amalekite Nation
In CH 30 David himself also had issues with these people and its because there leader failed to be obedient
there is always consequence to Sin
Recap CH 30 1st Samuel (READ)
The Amalekites raided their homes , took all of the women, children , and even the livestock
they destroyed their homes by burning everything
David and all of his men lost everything they had
“But” Good thing David had his head on straight and ran to the Lord for wisdom and Guidance in vs 6
all of this was because Saul did not do what he was suppose to !
His partial obedience which is disobedience had consequences
and when we read through this we see all the people that indirectly and directly suffered from the foolishness of Saul
Again were about to Go through ch 1 of Second Samuel and we will see how the consequence of Saul’s decision directly affects Him now
its this picture of what happens when we do not properly deal with our flesh
it always comes back and comes back stronger
So lets get into this
2 Samuel 1:1 “1 Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,”
So David was off finishing the Job that King Saul was suppose to have done
and Saul was off fighting the Philistines
so there was two battles that were going on around the same time
one was with the Amalekites and One with the Philistines
2 Samuel 1:2 “2 on the third day, behold, it happened that a man came from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. So it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the ground and prostrated himself.”
beat up, torn clothes , and dirty a man came in to tell David of the news
this to David was not a good sign
2 Samuel 1:3 “3 And David said to him, “Where have you come from?” So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.””
2 Samuel 1:4 “4 Then David said to him, “How did the matter go? Please tell me.” And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
2 Samuel 1:5 “5 So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?””
2 Samuel 1:6 “6 Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.”
2 Samuel 1:7 “7 Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’”
2 Samuel 1:8 “8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
2 Samuel 1:9 “9 He said to me again, ‘Please stand over me and kill me, for anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.’”
2 Samuel 1:10 “10 So I stood over him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”
so when we read through this we can see that this Amalekites account is a little different than what is described at the end of ch 31
it some what falls in line with it but now theres a little more detail
and from the Amalekites story, compared to ch 31 we can come to two conclusion
1 being that he is telling the truth and that He did deliver the final blow to kill Saul
Or He is lying and that is why David responds the way He does ( which we will continue to read)
Either way it doesn’t matter because the Amalekite at the end of the day is still affecting Gods people
they are still being a thorn in the flesh
Amalekite Story (Story 1)
if we stick to the Amalekites story that He killed Saul , it would be easy to say that Saul wouldn’t have died at the hand of an Amalekite
If Saul would have just obeyed God and killed all of them like he was commanded to do , they wouldn’t have killed Him
but because of the disobedience he ends up dying at the hand of the one he was suppose to kill
Again , there is consequence to sin and sin always finds a way back into your life unless you kill it completely
Now what if we stuck to the Story in Ch 31 (Story #2)
the Amalekite would then be considered a liar
so why would he have been on the battle field ?
he was a scavenger , a man that would go and take the valuable possessions of those that had died
so he took his opportunity to steal from King Saul and try to find favor in the eyes of David
if Saul would have done his job , this Man wouldn’t have taken the Kings crown and bracelet
sin has consequences !!
now was that grounds for His death ? Absolutely because God had already commanded that they be killed
So either way this Amalekite is in the wrong
wether he Killed Saul , which meant he Killed an Anointed King of God
or He simply stole what was not His to steal
He’s still wrong and David senses something is off
2 Samuel 1:11 “11 Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.
2 Samuel 1:12 “12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.”
David Genuinely Loved Saul even after all Saul had done to Him
He understood that Gods agenda was important and that His time as King would come
so instead of hating His number one enemy, He learned to Love Him unconditionally
David was a great Leader and displayed a heart after Gods own heart !
something that all of us can look at as an example when we have people in our life that cause us pain and suffering
learn to develop a heart and a love for them
2 Samuel 1:13 “13 Then David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.””
2 Samuel 1:14 “14 So David said to him, “How was it you were not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?””
2 Samuel 1:15 “15 Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and execute him!” And he struck him so that he died.”
So wether we stick to story 1 or story 2
this Amalekite is screwed
Deceit is in His heart and David senses it
David knows simply because He is an Amalekite that he is not to be trusted
the Amalekite is wrong for Killing Saul , he’s wrong for taking His possessions, and he’s wrong simply because he should be dead already
David again finishes the Job that should have been done by Saul
Sin has consequences Sin has lasting consequences
2 Samuel 1:16 “16 So David said to him, “Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.”
This is where we are going to Stop reading for today and out all of this I have 3 points Id like to talk about
(1)The first one is: Sin Has Consequence:
Sin: an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law
you guys have all heard me talk about this before but i’m going to talk about it again because its a big part of this passage
when we look at sin, we gotta realize that we can’t get away with it
sin never leads to anything Holy
sin only leads down a path of death and destruction
thank God Jesus gave us a way out through the death on the cross
but even as we are forgiven of sin , we still experience the consequence of that sin
just because we are saved doesn’t mean we get a hall pass to sin and get away with it
yes we are covered by Grace, by mercy and by Love , and yes we don’t have to suffer the wrath of God when we are no longer here
but we will experience the consequences of the sin that is in our Life
Romans 6:23 “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Sin leads to death , quite literally in this passage as well
Saul’s sin eventually caught up to Him
all of the years of disobeying the lord and doing things for His own Glory
it all backfired and lead to His death
we can even look at it not only from this biblical perspective but also from a worldly perspective
the world does not know sin like we know sin
they don’t have the ability to and to them sin is normal
but there are reasons for the suffering that is here on earth and this is due to Sin
we were born here on earth into a sinful environment
rooted in us is Sin because of Adam and eve
again the suffering that people experience who don’t know the Lord don’t understand why they are suffering
1 Corinthians 1:18 “18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
the message of the cross is not only the death on the cross but the full message of the Gospel and Gods word
all of the commands that Gods word has for us
all the direction and standard of Life that come from Gods word is part of the message of the cross
and when you don’t have that in your life like the world , you sin and you pay the consequences to that Sin
believers sin and pay the consequences to that sin but they have a moral compass and they know the difference between right and wrong
we have no excuse !
Sickness, disease , death , all these things come from a fallen sinful world
drug addicts: typically die from drugs
if they don’t die from drugs , they start to go crazy
especially when they try to get clean
all the chemical imbalances that have been created in the brain of an addict have consequences
usually or typically recovering addicts have to go on psych meds because they have literally lost their mind
again its a consequence of abusing drugs that we know as believers are not good for us
there are consequences to everything we willfully do against the lord
sometimes we don’t see the consequence of sin for years , but it will always come back around
How many of you like murder mysteries ?
they always end the same , at least the ones on Netflix ; someone has some weird fettish , does something stupid , kills someone , and then they get away with it for 10, 20, 30 years and then technology gets good and they get busted
( it always catches up)
what ever sin is in your life, in my life , if we don’t take it to the cross and deal with it, it will lead to worst things and worst outcomes
so i encourage everyone of you if you have sin in your life, simply confess it and work it out
1 John 1:9 “9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Sins Kryptonite is Jesus !
Now My Second Point/ Topic:
(#2) Lying never works:
This Amalekite if He lied , got what he deserved
his lie caught up to Him
Lying is actually a problem I believe everyone has
wether its a white lie or a big lie
its still a lie
Living in the grey area is still lying
telling partial truth is still lying
i’m sure you are all familiar with the phrase that is given in a court of Law ( I do solemnly and sincerely and truly declare and affirm that the evidence i shall give shall be the truth , the whole truth, and nothing but the truth
the truth is only fully truth, if it is not its a lie
Proverbs 14:5 “5 A faithful witness does not lie, But a false witness will utter lies.”
Proverbs 13:5 “5 A righteous man hates lying, But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame.”
Proverbs 17:7 “7 Excellent speech is not becoming to a fool, Much less lying lips to a prince.”
Ephesians 4:29 “29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
Colossians 3:9 “9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,”
Proverbs 6:16–19 “16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.”
God hates Liars , why because truth doesn’t matter to them
liars lie because it helps them and their agenda
The Amalekite he lied to a certain degree and David saw through it and Killed Him
Heres the other thing about Lying
when liars Lie , they develop a reputation around themselves that discerning people can see
one thing liars are not good at is telling stories
Again Just like the Amalekite when liars lie , their stories never line up
they always change and aren’t consistent
John 14:6 “6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Jesus is truth , in-bedded in the gospel is truth
the truth is what we should always strive to speak
1 John 3:18 “18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.”
truth is not only speech but it is also action
someone who practices truth also acts out the truth in their life
1 John 4:6 “6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”
3 John 4 “4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”
Ephesians 6:14 “14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,”
2 Timothy 2:15 “15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
John 1:14 “14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
as believers we should always be truth , speak truth , and show that truth is in us
Don’t Lie, lying is sin and sin Leads to death
My 3rd Point
(#3) Willfully Sinning is our fault:
Hebrews 10:26–27 “26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.”
if we believe , if we are saved , God develops inside of us a moral and ethical compass
from his nature alone we know the difference between right and wrong
we are responsible for the sin that we willfully commit
there is no sacrifice left to give when we willfully sin , but there will be a fearful expectation of judgement
we all have a choice wether or not to sin and sin itself starts off as temptation
James 1:14–15 “14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”
temptation leads to a choice , that choice determines wether or not we sin, then if we do sin it brings forth death
Again going back to the first point , Sin has consequences and they all look very different
1 John 1:9 “9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
but we have hope when it comes to Sin
through confession and admission that we have sinned
James 5:16 “16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”
Proverbs 28:13 “13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”
Acts 19:18 “18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds.”
Psalm 32:5 “5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah”
1 Corinthians 10:13 “13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
Jesus is our way of escape, we don’t have to fight the battle of sin and life on our own
Jesus took on that sin and he defeated in on the cross so long as we confess it to Him
End on This
James 4:7–10 “7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
If any of you have any sin in your life right now that you need to confess, do it don’t wait
if any of you need anyone to talk to about sin that is in your life
we as your leaders are here for you
it is not awkward or shameful to seek help
it is humble and necessary to continue to live a life pleasing to God
Dont forget that
Jesus loves everyone of you in this room and he gave us a way of Escape through His Son Jesus
