What is God Like?

Introduction:

Knowing the attributes of God is foundational for our faith.

Especially these days as in my opinion the view of God is getting lower and lower

Understanding who God is shapes the way we see the world, how we relate to Him, and how we live our lives.

God's attributes reveal His character, His power, and His ways.

When we grasp the truth about God's nature, it strengthens our trust in Him,

deepens our worship,

and provides a solid anchor in times of uncertainty.

In a world filled with shifting ideas, knowing the unchanging, sovereign, and holy nature of God gives us confidence and hope.

This study helps us understand that God is not distant or indifferent, but actively involved in His creation and in our lives.

There are 2 types of Attributes

Incommunicable Attributes:

These are attributes that belong exclusively to God and are not shared with humanity. They highlight God's transcendence and uniqueness.

Communicable Attributes:

These are attributes that God shares with humanity to some degree. While humans may reflect these attributes, they do so imperfectly and in a limited way.

Summary:

The primary difference is that incommunicable attributes reflect God's unique qualities that cannot be found in His creation,

while communicable attributes are qualities that humans can reflect, though imperfectly.

Understanding this distinction helps us appreciate both the majesty of God and our relationship with Him as His image-bearers.

God Exists (Scripture assumes God exists) He was not created

Genesis 1:1“1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Romans 1:19–20 “19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse.”

God is Independent (God does not need us or anything else)

Acts 17:24–25 “24 The God who made the world and everything in it—he is Lord of heaven and earth—does not live in shrines made by hands. 25 Neither is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.”

Isaiah 43:7 “7 everyone who bears my name and is created for my glory. I have formed them; indeed, I have made them.””

Zephaniah 3:17 “17 The Lord your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will be quiet in his love. He will delight in you with singing.””

God is Unchangeable

Malachi 3:6 “6 “Because I, the Lord, have not changed, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.”

God is Eternal

Psalm 90:2 “2 Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God.”

God is Omnipresent

Psalm 139:7–10“7 Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. 9 If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, 10 even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me.”

God is Spirit

John 4:24 “24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.””

God is invisible

John 1:18 “18 No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side—he has revealed him.”

John 14:9 “9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (God was made visible in Jesus Christ)

God is Omniscient (God knows everything at all time)

1 John 3:20 “20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows all things.”

God is Wise

Romans 16:27 “27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ—to him be the glory forever! Amen.”

God is Truthful

Jeremiah 10:10 “10 But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and eternal King. The earth quakes at his wrath, and the nations cannot endure his fury.”

God is Good

Luke 18:19 “19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone.”

God is Holy

Psalm 99:9 “9 Exalt the Lord our God; bow in worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.”

God is Jealous

Exodus 20:5 “5 Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me,”

God Wills what He Wills

Ephesians 1:11 “11 In him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of his will,”

We can take comfort in Deuteronomy 29:29 “29 The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.”

God has Freedom

Psalm 115:3 “3 Our God is in heaven and does whatever he pleases.”

God is Omnipotent (All Powerful)

Genesis 18:14 “14 Is anything impossible for the Lord? At the appointed time I will come back to you, and in about a year she will have a son.””

God is Perfect

Matthew 5:48 “48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

God is Beautiful

Psalm 27:4 “4 I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking him in his temple.”

God is Knowable

John 17:3 “3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ.”

God is wrathful toward sin

John 3:36 “36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.”

God is Righteous and Just

Deuteronomy 32:4 “4 The Rock—his work is perfect; all his ways are just. A faithful God, without bias, he is righteous and true.”

God is Love

1 John 4:8 “8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Conclusion:

As we conclude this study of God’s attributes,

we see how each aspect of His nature reflects His greatness and love.

Knowing God's attributes not only helps us see Him more clearly

but also allows us to better understand ourselves as His creation.

The more we understand God's independence,

power, goodness, and wisdom,

the more we are drawn into deeper awe and reverence.

This knowledge is not merely intellectual—

it transforms how we trust, worship, and obey Him.

In every situation, whether in joy or suffering,

remembering who God is gives us peace, guidance, and assurance

that He is in control and that we are deeply valued by Him.
