Peter’s Confession of Christ
Peter’s Confession of Christ
Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?”
The question asked by Christ constitutes who Jesus really was.
WHO IS JESUS?
Jesus is God manifested in the flesh.
This pagan city where many gods were recognized was a fitting place for Jesus to ask the disciples to recognize Hi as the Son of God.
They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
And He continued by questioning them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”
Peter actually said, “You are the Messiah.”
BUT WHOM DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?
“But Whom say ye that I am?” It is a question that all must ultimately answer.
Hundreds of millions say that He was a Prophet.
Very few presently deny that He actually lived.
YOU ARE THE CHRIST
“You are the Christ.”
Peter related in full the rebuke that Christ gave him (vs. 33).
Jesus asked the disciples who other people thought He was. It is not enough to know what others say about Jesus. You must accept for yourself that He is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God, and the One anointed by God to rescue us from the deadly consequences of sin for all eternity. To get to this realization of who Jesus really is, you must move from curiosity to commitment.
And He warned them to tell no one about Him.
Why did Jesus warn His own disciples not to tell anyone the truth about Him?
Jesus knew they needed more instruction about the work He would accomplish through His death and resurrection. They confessed Jesus as the Messiah.
