Setting the Stage

Read Luke 12:13-15

Luke 12:13–15 ESV
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

There is a set of words used more than any other. Try to figure out what they are while reading this parable.

Read Luke 12:16-21

Luke 12:16–21 ESV
And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Do you know someone like this?

Read Luke 12:18

Luke 12:16–18 ESV
And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

He was either very lucky or very good or a bit of both.

He would have fit is well in today’s Shopping Mall/Super Market strategies.

So if his plan works what are his goals?

Read Luke 12:19

Luke 12:19 ESV
And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’

So who does this man talk to about his goals? And what does this say about him?

Reflect on some of the other parables we have studied, who were the villains of these parables?

The three errors of Spiritual based people.

Read Luke 12:20-21

Luke 12:20–21 NIV84
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

So what were those most common phrases in the words spoken by this man?

Who did he leave out of his plans and communication?

Are your decisions Spiritually driven or Christ centered? Is it possible to have both?

The three keys to making the right decisions: 1) Take the “I” focus out of it. 2) Make sure God has a say in what you are doing. 3) Share your decisions and the outcomes with others.
