How to Pray Scripture

Scripture was originally written as meditation literature. You are supposed to “chew” on, discuss, study.
Sometimes you don’t know how to pray or what to pray.
Praying over/for people.
Pray the Word of God in difficult/awkward/uncomfortable situations.
What does that look like?
A good place to start is Psalms. Pray Scripture you already know.
Pray through Psalm 23 today. End of service pray through scripture.
Why Psalm 23?

Reminds us of God’s character
Short
The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
Shepherd- protector, guide, source (provision), safety
I shall not want- all of my needs will be met, God will provide all I need for what He has called me to do, my wants are not the priority here
He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
Rest- soul-level peace, freedom in Jesus,
Green meadows- symbol of health and growth, thriving, connected to life
Peaceful streams- peace, life, refreshment of HS
He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
Renews my strength- by His power, not ours, reliance, dependance
Guides my along right paths- Conviction, in tune with the HS
Bring honor to His name- Jesus is ultimately glorified through our obedience to Him. Our goal should always be to glorify God above ourselves
Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.
Even when…I will not…- There is never a promise hard times will not come. “When you are going through hell, don’t stop walking.” Declaration of God’s protection
Your rod and staff- Rod is used for protection and discipline, staff is used for guidance and assistance
You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
Feast in the midst- Jesus is my comfort, peace, source, protection, strength. With Him I am not afraid of my enemies.
Oil, overflow, blessings- oil= anointing, overflows with blessing= His presence
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever.
Goodness and unfailing love pursue me- Shepherds followed the sheep so none would stray
House of the LORD forever- Eternal provision and comfort, promise
