As we continue to consider “Praying Towards Renewal” we long to see what our God will do.
We have preached on the “Prayer to the God Who Hears”; “When God Does Not Listen”; “Praying towards Repentance; and now “Praying to God Who Brings Victory.”
Our focal passage is drawn from the contextual subject of Resurrection.
In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul deals with an apologetic of the concept of Resurrection, beginning with the Resurrection of Christ.
I love how Paul speaks to not just the reality of the resurrection of Christ, but says I can get a witness:
1 Corinthians 15:6 ESV
6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
Paul says over 500 saw him at one time and most of them are still hear and can testify.
But then he moves to the resurrection of the dead.
You see Paul wants his hearer to know that Christ raised bodily and has completed the victory.
He wants us to know that the work of Christ changes us:
1 Corinthians 15:51–52 ESV
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
But comes our focal passage:
1 Corinthians 15:57 ESV
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Prayer to the God Who Brings Victory is a:

Prayer of Thanks!

1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV)
57 But thanks be to God,...
For three things I thank God every day of my life: thanks that he has vouchsafed me knowledge of his works; deep thanks that he has set in my darkness the lamp of faith; deep, deepest thanks that I have another life to look forward to—a life joyous with light and flowers and heavenly song.1036
Helen Keller
Psalm 98:1 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.

Prayer Because He Gives!

1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV)
57 But thanks be to God, who gives...
Romans 7:24–25 (ESV)
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!...

Prayer Because We Can Know!

1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV)
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory...
νῖκος -ους, τό; (nikos), n. victory.
God’s people do not fight for victory but from victory!
Warren W. Wiersbe
1 Corinthians 15:54–55 (ESV)
54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
Three times in two verses we see death shot its shot at victory, but it failed.
Christ Won!
Christ is Winning!
Christ will Win!

Prayer Because He Is Worthy!

Maybe we ask ourselves about our own worth at times, but it is Him makes us worthy.
Psalm 24:3–4 ESV
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.
Romans 11:6 ESV
6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
A doxology meaning that God is worthy of limitless adoration and worship. It also is an example of the kind of honor and thanksgiving that people should give to Him (compare v. 21).
