The Call

The Gospel of Mark part 2
Today we are continuing with our new series on the book of Mark ,
Months ago meeting with the pastors from Living Stones and Pastor Barney from Life water church we decided to do a new series together on the Gospel of Mark
We are praying for a greater revelation and deeper understanding as we walk together through the Gospel of Mark.
If you are just joining us, the Gospel of Mark was written in the mid 60’s AD by John Mark, a disciple of Peter, Nephew of Barnabas according to Hippolytus of Rome.
Let’s pray
Last week we ended with Jesus being tempted in the desert for 40 days and Mark gave no details he was very brief.
It is possible that the Gospel of Mark it was written to be memorized and passed on. To go viral ,The shortest of the Gospels.
The call

1 Repent and Believe

Mar 1:14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,
Mar 1:15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
The Gospel the good news, Jesus message to us.
God is not angry at you, looking forward punishing sinners, He sent Jesus Christ ,His son, to take our sins upon Himself, not only ours but the sins of the world.
The bible says that all of us sinned and deserve hell
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
We need to repent from our sins including our own perceptions of God our wrong believes and believe in the gospel.

2 To Follow Jesus

Jesus Calls the First Disciples
Mar 1:16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
Mar 1:17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
Mar 1:18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Mar 1:19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.
Mar 1:20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
Now as we read Mark’s gospel, because he doesn’t give us any background, it would appear that Jesus just walking along the shore of Galilee suddenly saw Peter and his brother Simon and said, "Come and follow me. I’ll make you fishers of men," and they just left their nets and followed Him. Well, that is what happened, but this isn’t the first time that they had met Jesus. This is when Jesus called them to discipleship, but they had met Jesus earlier. That was the moment they left everything behind.
Just like with the disciples will come a time when Jesus will call you to follow Him completely, with your whole heart. Some of us answered that call years ago others not yet. Yes we say yes to Jesus believe he is the Son of God but to give Him everything, make Him Lord and follow Him, is another step.
The call is to leave everything behind, after that our sole commitment is to follow Him. I have met people who left behind their business, their profession, carriers, relationships, countries, and asked God how where they going to please Him? What is it that you are holding on ? ask Him to help you, some times is just a fear .
Jesus can call you anytime regardless of place and time.
Once you respond to Him, ministry begins.

3 Authority over demonic spirits

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit
Mar 1:21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.
Mar 1:22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
Jesus Taught, spoke and minister with great authority, Jesus was the only one who could say
I am the truth.
Jesus talking to Thomas said
Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
He had authority and now He has all authority
Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Let’s go back to Mark
Mar 1:23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,
Mar 1:24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
Mar 1:25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
Mar 1:26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
Mar 1:27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
Mar 1:28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
Jesus in you will do the same things
The day you turn your heart to Jesus repent of your sins and believe in the gospel He will give you power and authority, and yes demons will listen to you.
My younger brother was a professor at a University in Rio, usually you don’t park your car outside of a University for they will be vandalized, the robbers know how many hours you will be inside. My brother used the bus system,
Demonic activity in Rio is pretty common there is not a day that you walk around and not see several demoniacs, some just doing crazy things others being loud cussing everyone, one day my brother was at this bus stop and just down the road this demon possessed man was coming towards him, my brother under his breath, said I bind you in Jesus name, no one could hear him, but the man went silent spoke to no one, passed my brother without disturbing him, crossed the street than he turn around and said to my brother, I am bound, turned around again and kept going.
Welcome Jesus and you have power and authority.
Jesus Heals Many
Mar 1:29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
Mar 1:30 Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.
Mar 1:31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
· Interesting to see Jesus discernment, usually when someone is not feeling well with a fever, google says
· Take over-the-counter drugs like paracetamol or ibuprofen in appropriate doses to help bring your temperature down.
· Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water, to avoid dehydration.
· Sponge exposed skin with tepid water or use cold packs if the fever is very high.
· Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, cold baths, or showers, as these can worsen the condition.
· Have plenty of rest, including bed rest, to recover faster.
But Jesus full of wisdom, He took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. inappropriate? Maybe, Unless it was demonic and she was being oppressed by a demon .
That is what He did the rest of the evening
Mar 1:32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.
the word translated in Greek is demons. Not devils because there’s only one devil
Mar 1:33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door.
Mar 1:34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Jesus Preaches in Galilee
Mar 1:35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.
Jesus was very tired from the night before, It’s interesting that Jesus’ concept of being renewed in strength and refreshed was not sleeping in, but getting out early before anyone else was up and communing with the Father. And He drew His strength from prayer.
Mar 1:36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,
Mar 1:37 and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”
Mar 1:38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”
Mar 1:39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

4 To Heal others

Jesus Cleanses a Leper
Mar 1:40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.”
Mar 1:41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”
Mar 1:42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
Mar 1:45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
Leprosy was probably one of the most horrible ways to live and die
1940 was the first effective treatment.
The symptoms include:
· Light-colored or red skin patches
· Reduced sensation of touch, pins and needles
· Numbness
· Weakness in the hands and feet
· Pain in the joints
· Disfiguring skin sores
· Weight loss
· Eye damage (dryness, reduced blinking)
· Hair loss
Leprosy was always connected to sin in the bible
Sin has a way of just anesthetizing a person. A loss of feeling, and slowly you’re destroyed. It’s incurable, except by a divine work of God.
And so Jesus said, "I’m willing; be thou clean, go. Show yourself to the priest." "
Mar 1:43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once,
Mar 1:44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
Mar 1:45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
Giving God the Glory and obedience are equally important.
Have you made Jesus the Lord of our life?
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Joh 3:16 To receive Jesus we need to accept Him as God’s son,
we need to repent from our sins and a life of selfishness,
ask Him to be your Lord and savior, not that we deserve it, but is a gift from God.
If this is your desire today, please repeat this prayer after me? Heavenly Father I’m sinner, I’m sorry for my sins, I repent of my sins I’m willing to turn away from my sins. I receive Christ as my savior, I confess Him as Lord And from this moment on, I want to follow and serve Him, in the fellowship of His church, In Jesus name, Amen!
1Co 11:23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
1Co 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke itand said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
1Co 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
1Co 11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.
1Co 11:27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks thiscup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
Heb 9:14 dead works, acts, sins
E mau aku ka loko maika’i o ka Haku, Iesu Kristo; me ke aloha a ke Akua, a me ka launa pu ‘ana mai o ka Uhane Hemolele ia ‘olua, a me makou apau. Amene.
