Theme of the Psalm: Psalm 107:1

Psalm 107:1 NIV
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
This theme is seen many times in the Psalms, but nowhere as clearly as in Psalm 136

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever. to him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever. who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever.

The Psalmist calls for those who have experienced God’s enduring love to tell their story - Psalm 107:2-3

Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.

The Bible records the stories of real people so we can identify with them and have hope - Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.

There are two aspects of God’s story that need to be told

God’s Provides for His People - Psalm 107:4-32

God provided for His people when they were wandering in the wilderness - Psalm 107:4-9

Probably refers to Israel wandering in the wilderness for 40 years
Their Predicament - vs. 4-5

Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.
God’s Response - vs. 6-7
Psalm 107:6–7 NIV
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.
God’s blessing - vs. 8-9
Psalm 107:8–9 NIV
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

God provided for His people when they were taken captive - Psalm 107:10-16

Possibly refers to when Israel was taken captive into Assyria and Babylon
Their predicament - vs. 10-12

Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
God’s Response - vs. 13-14

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.
God’s Blessing - vs. 15-16
Psalm 107:15–16 NIV
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

God provided for His people when the suffered the consequences of foolish choices - Psalm 107:17-22

Could refer to many situations
Their predicament - Vs. 17-18

Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.
God’s Response - vs. 19-20
Psalm 107:19–20 NIV
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.
God’s Blessing - vs.21-22
Psalm 107:21–22 NIV
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.

God provided for His people when they failed in their courage - Psalm 107:23-32

Could refer to an unknown past event or be a picture of Christ stilling the storm
Their Predicament - vs. 23-27
Psalm 107:23–27 NIV
Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end.
God’s response - vs. 28-30

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
God’s Blessing - vs. 31-32
Psalm 107:31–32 NIV
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

God has power over everything - Psalm 107:33-42

God demonstrates His dominion over the natural world - Psalm 107:33-38

God has the power to destroy the natural world - vs. 33-34
Psalm 107:33–34 NIV
He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
God has the power to restore the natural world - vs. 35-38
Psalm 107:35–38 NIV
He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish.

God demonstrates His Dominion over those who obey or disobey His commands - Psalm 107:39-42

God has the power to destroy - vs. 39-40
Psalm 107:39–40 NIV
Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste.
God has the power to restore - vs. 41-42
Psalm 107:41–42 NIV
But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.

Conclusion:

The wise will learn and heed the Word of God - Psalm 107:43
