This morning we end Chapter 9 and move right into Chapter 10
If you will recall chapter 9 of Romans Paul highlights the Sovereignty of God
And church we know that sometimes we wrestle with that because we think we must know exactly how it works
Church it is called faith
It is part of your relationship with the God of the universe
And last week we talked about how rather then driving us crazy or to frustration to know and understand the truth of Gods Sovereignty should drive us to worship the grace and mercy filled God who by the way poured it out on you and I
Paul is going to wrap up chapter 9 with the topic of gentiles attaining righteousness
Something Jews and probably Jewish believers still struggled with
Paul continues to drive home the point that is hard for the Jewish believers to understand\
Faith
Romans 9:30–33 NASB95
30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
Paul is clearly explaining to the Jewish believers that gentiles recieved righteousness not because the lived it in their actions but because the had faith
He then goes on to say Jews did not receive righteousness because they just acted like they did not have faith
Church it boils down to a very simple thing and we have talked about at Maranatha
Salvation is not started with your actions
You can come to church and pull the wool over everyone's eyes and let them think you have it all together and be as lost as the world
But you are good at playing Christ
Paul is sharing It is by faith that you are saved
He is making the transition from Gods Sovereignty to what is your roll
Or what is your response Gods Sovereignty
Nothing you did outside of simply believing in God
So Paul continues will his letter
Romans 10:1–3 NASB95
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 3 For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
Again Paul states his desire to see his kin the Jewish people come to know Christ
First and foremost we see Paul praying for those who don’t know Christ
Church I got to ask but are we praying for those who are non believers?
CL Lewis Said
“I have two lists of names in my prayers, those for whose conversion I pray and those for whose conversion I give thanks. The little trickle of transferences from List A to List B is a great comfort.”
Church we need to be we must be praying for people we know who don’t know Christ
Paul shares that the Jewish people were zealous but not with the knowledge after Christ
They ran but they ran after their own interests, the law, and the jewish way of life
They did not run after Christ because they didn’t know Him
They didn’t understand they were to run after Christ
So Paul is going to share with them what it looks like
Romans 10:4–7 NASB95
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness. 6 But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), 7 or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”
Paul shows the difference between simply living by the law to attain righteousness
You will in-fact live righteous but your heart and soul will be lost
But righteousness based on faith is different
It starts in the heart and works its way out to the living it out loud
Paul shows the difference in that You can’t get up to heaven with out Christ and you can’t be brought back to life without Christ
Paul is showing that it has always been Christ
That Christ is the pentacle of the law
That is what the law pointed to a relationship with Christ
Romans 10:8–11 NASB95
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
Paul says that the word is near to you
That you must believe in the content of the Gospel
Which is Christ
The entire story of the Bible points to Christ and church now that he has come it would make sense for us to believe
Paul continues with salvation
That if you confess Jesus as Lord
which is to deny other gods in your life
That if you believe God raised Him from the dead
That if you can believe that you can believe that God is the God of what man says impossible
Paul continues to explain salvation for the Jewish believers in Rome so they can share with their other friends
When you believe with your heart it leads to righteousness
You can act Christian and not be one
You can play the part and still go to hell
Let me make that clear this morning
not believing with your mind but with your heart leads to righteousness
When we confess Jesus in front of Man He will confess us in front of God the Father
And church the results are salvation
Which is why church if you want to follow Christ
We ask that come down the front and confess with your mouth in front of people
We ask if you believe in your heart
I can’t answer those for you because if I could I would have already
Then Paul reminds us of the guarantee of following Jesus
You will be disappointed if you follow me
You will be disappointed if you follow your spouse
You will be disappointed if you follow who ever or read whatever
But
You will not be disappointed when you follow Christ
Praise the Lord this morning for that promise out of scripture
No one else or nothing else has a promise like that
Then Paul reminds the Jewish believers in Rome
Romans 10:12–13 NASB95
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
There is no difference in the Jew or the Greek
God is the God of them all
It doesn’t matter what your hertiage is
It doesn’t matter who your family is
It doesn’t matter where you have been or where you come from
Church Paul is saying that Salvation is absolutely for everyone
That it doesn’t matter who you are, where you are, or how you got there
If you will repent of your sin and trust Jesus
If you will confess with your mouth which is to repent of the other Gods in your life to turn from them
If you will believe that Jesus is the son of God and God raised Him from the dead
To believe that Jesus was, is and will do what He has said HE will do
To place your faith in Jesus this morning
You will not be disappointed I can promise that
Closing
If that is you
If you want to be saved this morning
Jesus can do that this morning
Would you be obedient to come and speak with someone who can answer your questions this morning
Or church maybe you have a relationship with Jesus and you needed reminded that you will not be disappointed when you trust in Jesus
Maybe you need to spend sometime in prayer at the alter
