Q42 What is the third commandment and what does it require? A42 The third commandment is, “You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain.” This requires reverence in all that God has revealed about Himself including His name, Word and works (Exodus 20:7)
Interaction
What are your pet’s names? Why did you name your pets that? (INTENT IS TO GET THEM TO CONSIDER THE CONNECTION BETWEEN NAME AND IDENTITY/CHARACTER/NATURE)
What does your name mean? Why did your parent’s name you that? Do names matter?
Does anyone know what the name of Jesus or Yeshua means (Yahweh’s Salvation)
What a great name right? Did you know some people choose to call Jesus Yeshu, which is an acronym for Yimach, Shemo Vezichro - or “May his name and memory be blotted out”
What happens when someone twists a name to mean something bad instead of what it really means with our names? WE DON’T LIKE IT VERY MUCH, IT IS HURTFUL
We are supposed to reverence the Lord, not to mishandle or twist His good name
Scripture example
Leviticus 24:10–16 | 10 Now the son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the sons of Israel; and the Israelite woman’s son and a man of Israel struggled with each other in the camp. 11 And the son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name and cursed. So they brought him to Moses. (Now his mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) 12 And they put him in custody so that the command of Yahweh might be made clear to them. 13 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 14 “Bring the one who has cursed outside the camp, and let all who heard him lay their hands on his head; then let all the congregation stone him. 15 “And you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If anyone curses his God, then he will bear his sin. 16 ‘Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of Yahweh shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.
Transition to Question and Answer
The man blasphemed the name of the Lord that had delivered him from enslavement in Egypt. He cursed the God that had sent the 10 plagues upon Egypt. He did not reverence the name of the Lord and the Lord punished him
Question and Answer
So here is tonight’s question: Q42 What is the third commandment and what does it require? A42 The third commandment is, “You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain.” This requires reverence in all that God has revealed about Himself including His name, Word and works (Exodus 20:7 ““You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.” )
Restate
We are forbidden from blaspheming the Lord, instead we are to reverence His name, His word and His works.
What are some examples of blasphemy
What are ways we can reverence His name, Word, works?
Ask if anyone has questions then define terminology
Definitions and Examples for Key Terms
Name of Yahweh Definition: The name of Yahweh refers not just to His literal name but represents His character, authority, and reputation. Taking His name in vain means to treat it with disrespect or irreverence, using it carelessly or in ways that diminish His holiness. Example: Using God’s name in trivial or insincere oaths (e.g. “I swear by heaven itself”, casual exclamations (e.g., "Oh my God!"), or even false prophecy where someone claims to speak for God without His command (Deut. 18:20). Cross-References: Leviticus 19:12 “‘And you shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am Yahweh.” Matthew 6:9 ““Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” Isaiah 42:8 ““I am Yahweh, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images.”
Word of God Definition: The Word of God includes all that God has spoken and revealed through Scripture. Reverence for God's Word means recognizing its authority and truth, studying it diligently, and obeying its commands. Example: When believers read, study, and preach Scripture with the understanding that it is God’s authoritative revelation, they honor His Word. On the other hand, twisting Scripture for personal gain or treating it lightly would violate this command. Cross-References: 2 Timothy 3:16–17“All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Psalm 119:89 “Forever, O Yahweh, Your word stands firm in heaven.” Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
Works of God Definition: The works of God refer to His mighty deeds, both in creation and in redemption. To revere God's works is to acknowledge His power, wisdom, and providence in all that He does and to give Him glory for it. Example: Praising God for His creation and His saving acts, such as delivering Israel from Egypt, or Christ’s work of redemption on the cross. Failing to recognize God’s hand in the world, or crediting His works to human effort or luck, would show irreverence. Cross-References: Psalm 19:1 “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And the expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” Job 37:14 ““Give ear to this, O Job, Stand and carefully consider the wondrous deeds of God.” .Acts 2:22 ““Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God did through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—”
Questions for them to answer
So then what is blasphemy of God’s Holy Spirit?
It is rejecting the testimony of God specifically with regard to Christ so that we might believe
Matthew 12:31–32 ““Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. “And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”
Why does this matter?
How we treat God’s name is indicative of what we think about Him. Would we use our own mother’s name as a curse word?

Question 114 What reasons are annexed to the third commandment?
The reasons annexed to the third commandment, in these words, [The Lord thy God,] and, [For the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain,] (Exod. 20:7) are, because he is the Lord and our God, therefore his name is not to be profaned, or any way abused by us; (Lev. 19:12) especially because he will be so far from acquitting and sparing the transgressors of this commandment, as that he will not suffer them to escape his righteous judgment; (Ezek. 36:21–23, Deut. 28:58–59, Zech. 5:2–4) albeit many such escape the censures and punishments of men. (1 Sam. 2:12,17,22,24, 1 Sam. 3:13)
