What’s the destination I want my audience to arrive at?
Repent for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand
The final two verses of the OT say...
The people were waiting for Elijah.
John was sent to prepare the way for Christ.
John preached repentance
It was usual for proselytes to be told to repent. John however was telling Jews to repent.
Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand
Reason for repentance
Repentance includes change of life
Luke 3:10–14 “So the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?” He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” Then tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Collect no more than what is appointed for you.” Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?” So he said to them, “Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.””
He called Herod to repent and it cost him his life. The price was his head.
Repentance includes admitting guilt and forsaking false hope
Brood of vipers-
Don’t say we’re sons of Abraham.
Application
For people to be prepared for the coming of the Messiah they needed to repent. Today Jesus Christ has come and accomplished his work of salvation.
The way to come to him is still the same. Repentance.
Repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
For those of us who have come to Christ we must remember that repentance includes a changed life. A turning from sin.
We never graduate from repentance. Martin Luther in his 95 Theses said “”When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said “Repent,” he intended that the entire life of believers should be repentance.”
Are there things in your life you need to repent of?
