Hymn # 1 - Joyful, Joyful
Hymn # 74 - Majesty
Background:
Psalms 113-118 are known as the Hallel Psalms (Hallel means “praise”).
While many psalms praise God, this set of psalms focuses on the themes of deliverance that was brought about by the Exodus.
These psalms were recited at Jewish feasts and especially while celebrating the Passover.
"Christ suffered once for sin" (1 Pet. 3:18).
"Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Cor. 5:7).
We now have every reason to gather as often as we can to sing songs of "Hallel" to our glorious King!
We actually don’t know when or by whom this Psalm was written.
Similar to the Songs of Hannah in 1 Sam. 2:1-10 and Mary in Luke 1:46-55.
Psalm 113 ESV
1 Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! 2 Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore! 3 From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised! 4 The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! 5 Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, 6 who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? 7 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, 8 to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. 9 He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!

From first to last, Hallelujah

First word in v.1 and last word in v. 9 is “Hallelujah.” - to shout joyfully.
compound word
to boast and praise / shortened from of God proper name. Yah…yahweh.
Praise 5 times.
Hymn # 106 - Praise Him, Praise Him

Summoning the Servants to Praise at all times and in all places. (1-3)

Psalm 113:1–3 ESV
1 Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! 2 Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore! 3 From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised!
mark the time and space in which the praise is to happen:
one about how the praise is to go on forever,
another about how the praise is to happen everywhere the sun shines.
these means that the praise of God is never completed.
Remind you that there are angelic beings that God created whose sole purpose for being brought into existence is to day and night never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy...
Revelation 4:8 (ESV) - 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”
Do you think I am exaggerating? Nope. He is utterly holy and we need to recognize this.
What we mean by this is that God is wholly other. He exists outside of space and time. He is utterly pure and incorruptible. He is not like anything else in His creation. He is totally separate, unique, distinct and in a class all by Himself.
At all times (this time and evermore)
Even when I walk through the deepest darkness. death is approaching…drawing us like a magnet.
we can praise cause He is with us.
Practical - First things Praise
Last thing Praise…
Make a decision to do this. grab a hymn memorize one…that praises
Hymn # 563 - Count Your Blessings
Hymn # 547 - I Will Sing of the Mercies

He is Exalted Over All (4-6)

Psalm 113:4–6 ESV
4 The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! 5 Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, 6 who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?
His gracious transcendence
4 over all the nations (in our world today)
His glory is over all of them.
GLORY - KAVODE - His weightiness
Feel the force of His surpassing glory by asking a Rhetorical question.
Who is like Yahweh our God?
He sits enthroned on high and has to stoop low to see.
Has to look far down.
Babel.
There is nothing higher than Him. How is that a source of comfort to you?
ow is that reality the cause of exuberant praise?
Hymn # He is Exalted
Hymn # 5 - Be Exalted Oh God

The Lofty Lord reaches down to Lift up the Lowly. (7-9)

Psalm 113:7–9 ESV
7 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, 8 to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. 9 He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!
Look at what he does with all that power. He takes great personal interest in the poor. He raises them up. THEM? The High and Lofty Lord cares about dusty poor people? Yup
Genesis 3:19 (ESV) - 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
disintegrating into dust…
The needy on the ash heap - a place that they would burn garbage outside the city walls.
He will raise them up. Yup.
That is impressive enough but then look at what he does after he raises them up…He sits them down.
James 2:5 (ESV) - 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
adn it is what He has promised to do for us.
How do you feel poor? How do you feel needy?
Lonely. Tired, aches and pains. relational strains…crazy world where it is hard to know what or who to trust.
2 Barren women
1 Samuel 2:1–10 ESV
1 And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. 2 “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. 3 Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. 4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. 5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. 6 The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. 8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world. 9 “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. 10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
This is what God did for the humble King Jesus (Phil. 2:5-11)
Mary’s Song - (there is no more barren of a womb than the womb of a virgin).
Luke 1:46–55 ESV
46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
The exalted one, became low in order to lift up His creation.
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The rich one became poor that through his poverty we might become rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
The God who gives life to dead wombs like Hannah’s and virgin wombs like Mary’s can give you new birth and new creation status if you find yourself in the Lofty Lord who stepped into His creation to redeem it.
