Rewind

Luke 23:50–56 “There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God. He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed. It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how his body was placed. Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.”

Main text

Luke 24:1–12 CSB
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men. “He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’And they remembered his words. Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.

The Breakdown

Luke 24:1 “On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.”
The first day (sabbath is over)
Early first thing in the day
Jesus has already been wrapped but they are likely going to cover his face and hands
Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James (Not the mother of Jesus)
Spices were not used to preserve but to cover a smell (remember the tomb of Lazarus)
Spices also assure us they did not expect Jesus resurrection
Luke 24:2 “They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.”
Pharisees and Pilot have sealed and set guards for fear of the disciples or followers stealing
Pilot - “Go make it secure as you know how.”
Cork shaped stone sealed with wax and rope
No earthquake
No account of the guards fainting or running when seeing the angel (death by fear)
Matthew 28:2–4 “There was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards were so shaken by fear of him that they became like dead men.”
very early on Luke is getting to the point
Luke 24:3 “They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.”
Can you imagine the confusion?
The body the was sealed in stone and guarded is now gone
Luke 24:4 “While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.”
Perplexed (To be at a loss)
Two men? but the other accounts only record one?
Dazzling (flash, gleam, hurl lightning.)
Luke 24:5 “So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men.”
Terrified (Do not be afraid is often the first words from such an Angelic being)
The living among the dead
Don’t you understand? Have you not heard the prophesy?
Luke 24:6–7 “He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day”
Luke 9:18–22 “While he was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.” “But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.” But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one, saying, “It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.””
Luke 24:8 “And they remembered his words.”
They remembered
We often forget words we do not understand
Luke 24:9–11 “Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.”
Women not held in high regard
still not believing or understanding Jesus words
Nonsense (idle talk, Futile)
Luke 24:12 “Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.”
Amazed (astonished, full of wonder)
Peter and John but Luke only mentions Peter
Did Peter believe? we know from John that they still did not understand but he had to see what had happened to his Lord
Peter has a Faith like David (He has just denied him)
i can almost see peter strapping on his sword to fight for his king regardless of what he is thinking his zeal still controls and drives him

Clearing things up

When reading across the gospels they seem to conflict with each other if we aren’t reading carefully (all record and focus on different points)
all the writers focus on different aspects
John has the most detailed account
John 20:1–19 CSB
On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she went running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him!” At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. The wrapping that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself. The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying. But Mary stood outside the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. She saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus’s body had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “Because they’ve taken away my Lord,” she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus. “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking?” Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”—which means “Teacher.” “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them that I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what he had said to her. When it was evening on that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Don’t hold onto me now for when i ascend i will be with you always
John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.”
Can you imagine following Jesus through his ministry and being led by his teaching and then watching the whip shred him to pieces watch him stumble to his crucifixion where he gave up his spirit to the will of his father and the very earth and ground and sky itself cried out

Application

We are called to follow we don't always see the full picture
Even when we don’t understand Gods word we hold firm to it knowing that it is true
Understand our motives for following (My testimony of assurance)
Run like peter back to Jesus regardless of your sin of your denial and repent and follow after him
Why did Luke Write what he wrote? Christ has risen and that is all that matters He has conquered death
This is the message from all the gospels That Christ submitting to the will of his father, was born a man. Lived a life apart from sin, he he loved his people, healed the broken for his fathers glory, spoke and proclaimed the word of God unashamed, and was beaten, tortured, mocked, spit on, and killed and three days later he arose from the grave. And not long after ascended into heaven he has conquered death and reigns victorious and one day we will be with him because and only because of his sacrifice
