Title: Be the one God choose you to be
Ephesian 5:8-9
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
This verse serve as a reminder and a command.
Reminder is
For you were once darkness
Before we were unknown to the light of God and we were prisoner of Darkness
Darkness: Symbolizes the realm dominated by sin and death (Roman 6:23), Darkness also can refer to lack of understanding. John 12:35
John 12:35 (NIV) says:
“Then Jesus told them, ‘You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.’”
In this verse, Jesus warns His listeners to embrace the light, which symbolizes His presence and teachings, while they still have the opportunity. He cautions that walking in darkness—living without His guidance—leads to confusion and a lack of direction. The call to "walk in the light" urges people to follow Him and live according to the truth He reveals, before spiritual blindness or separation from God sets in.
But now you are light in the Lord
Light: Represents righteousness and life (compare 2 Cor 6:14)
2 Corinthians 6:14 (NIV) says:
"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"
This passage is often interpreted to emphasize the importance of believers surrounding themselves with like-minded individuals who share their faith and values.
Psalm 119:105 (NIV) says:
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
This verse emphasizes that God's Word provides guidance and understanding. The imagery of a lamp and light suggests clarity and direction in the midst of life's uncertainties and challenges. Just as a lamp illuminates the way in darkness, God's Word helps believers discern the right path and avoid spiritual blindness or confusion.
1 John 1:5-6 (NIV):
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth."
These verses teach that God is the source of all light, representing purity, truth, and righteousness. To have genuine fellowship with Him, we must walk in the light, living in alignment with His truth. Claiming to know God while living in darkness (sin or spiritual ignorance) is dishonest and inconsistent with a life of true faith.
Command is
Children of Light:
A common label for those who are in right relationship with God. (Romans 2:19)
Romans 2:19 (NIV) says:
"if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,"
In this verse, Paul addresses those who believe they have the wisdom and moral insight to guide others, particularly those who are spiritually blind or in darkness. It highlights the responsibility of those who teach or lead in faith to live according to the light they claim to offer. The verse is part of a larger discussion on judgment and the need for authenticity and integrity in one's faith and conduct.
For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth
FRUIT
a word as used in Scripture denoting produce in general, whether vegetable or animal. The Hebrews divided the fruits of the land into three classes:,
(1.) The fruit of the field, "corn-fruit" (Heb. dagan); all kinds of grain and pulse.
(2.) The fruit of the vine, "vintage-fruit" (Heb. tirosh); grapes, whether moist or dried.
(3.) "Orchard-fruits" (Heb. yitshar), as dates, figs, citrons, etc.
The fruits of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22, 23)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Goodness, righteousness and truth
This verse emphasizes that living in the light—following God's guidance—produces visible outcomes in one's life. These outcomes include:
Goodness: Acting with moral integrity (Naitik Immandari) and kindness.
In simple terms, it means doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do, and not just because someone is watching or because it benefits you. It’s about being true to your values and principles at all times.
Righteousness: Living in accordance with God's standards and justice.
Truth: Embracing and living by God's truth, rather than deceit.
These qualities reflect the transformation that occurs when one walks in the light of Christ, showcasing the evidence of a life aligned with His principles.
Finish by reading V 10-14
Ephesians 5:10–14 (LEB)
trying to learn what is well-pleasing to the Lord.
= Faith (Hebrew 11:6)
And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even expose them.
= Speak the truth : Ephesians 4:15 (NIV): "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ."
For it is shameful even to speak about the things being done by them in secret,
= Lust, evil planning, dual personality,
but all things exposed by the light are made visible, for everything made visible is light. Therefore it says,
Wake up, sleeper,
and rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.
