John 1:47–50 “Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.””
Why did Nathanael ask Jesus how did he know him?
Because they never met before
So how did Jesus know his name?
Jesus is God, who knows all things, and sees all things
He saw Nathanael sitting the fig tree, something only Nathanael knew
No other person was around Nathanael
Therefore Jesus’ knowledge was supernatural
Psalm 139:1–6 “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.”
How does v.2 relate to what we just read about Jesus and Nathanael?
Jesus knew every action of Nathanael such sitting or standing and he knows every action you take as well
In v.3 what do you think my ways means?
My ways refer to the why we do things
The thought process behind it
The thing is no one truly knows why we do things the way we do
Not even your parents and your future spouse will know except God
Only He truly knows everything that you do
Isn’t it wonderful to know that there is someone out there who knows us so perfectly that he even knows why we do the things we do?
In v.4 God even knows what we are about to do before we even do it.
Is it comforting or scary knowing that God sees everything we do? Why or why not?
For Christians it’s comforting because we know God cares for us
And we see God cares for us in v.5
To hem us in behind and before is to protect us
Like guardrails on two sides of a road (guardrail pic)
What do guardrails do?
They protect you from going off the road
But also protect from things trying to come in
God keeps us on the right path and protects us from those trying to come in and do harm
But For non-Christian’s it’s terrifying
Before I was a Christian I would be very terrified and paranoid of things like I would get scared when I was home alone taking a shower thinking someone might get me
And it’s because I knew that God’s judgement was real and that I deserved to be punished
Finally in v.6 knowing that God knows us intimately brings us awe and worship of Him.
Such knowledge is what in v.6?
Too wonderful for me
Too high, like the cookie jar that’s too high on the shelf
Unless you’re Ebube
God knows you supernaturally
God knows you exclusively
God knows you to care for you
God knows you intimately
