A reawakening of faith or renewal of commitment to God

This is what we will see in this chapter.

a christian concert?

Revivals can lead to a greater hunger for God’s word, more intense prayer and a passion for worship and fellowship.

First Reflect. we will see the people reflect. (unhurried consideration of something recalled to mind)

We as believers should reflect our lives and see if what we are doing is pleasing to God. Reading the bible will shine the light on how we should be living and serving God.

Repent- feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one’s wrongdoing or sin in their lives.

stop- and turn from doing it.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

everybody.. no one is exempt.

neat thing about having a relationship with God

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Restore- bring back from a previous right ,practice, custom, or situation. return us to the former condition we have with God. allows us to come to him and have a relationship with him again just like we never left him.

Isaiah 43:25 ““I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.”

Nehemiah 9:1 “Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, in sackcloth, and with dust on their heads.”

In the feast of Tabernacles there was a remembrance of their dwelling in tents, or booths, in the wilderness, as well as their fathers dwelling in tents in Canaan; to remind them of their origin and their deliverance

the last day was the 8th day the great day of feast. the feast of gathering when the harvest was over. this was celebrated on that day.

Exodus 23:16 “and the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors which you have sown in the field; and the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field.”

one of 3 pilgrimage festivals. usually around end of September and beginning October.

Leviticus 23:34–37 ““Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days to the Lord. On the first day there shall be a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work on it. For seven days you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. On the eighth day you shall have a holy convocation, and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. It is a sacred assembly, and you shall do no customary work on it. ‘These are the feasts of the Lord which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire to the Lord, a burnt offering and a grain offering, a sacrifice and drink offerings, everything on its day—”

This whole feast was treated like a Sabbath.

Eating sparingly or abstaining from food altogether, either from necessity or desire. In medical terms, fasting is the detoxification of the body through the restriction of food.

Spiritual fasting entails setting aside activities as well as reducing the intake of food and replacing these activities with the exercise of prayer and preoccupation with spiritual concerns. The NT word which is translated “fasting” literally means one who has not eaten, one who is empty.

When you fast.

John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

If you allow Jesus to be your Lord of your life , you are allowing Him to become greater in your life.

Fasting and wearing sackcloth ( materiel made of burlap)

and sprinkling dust on your head were signs of sorrow and repentance.

Today if you fast. Do it this way.

Matthew 6:16–18 “

“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

Nehemiah 9:2–3 “Then those of Israelite lineage separated themselves from all foreigners; and they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for one-fourth of the day; and for another fourth they confessed and worshiped the Lord their God.” .

Ezra 10:1–17 NKJV

Now while Ezra was praying, and while he was confessing, weeping, and bowing down before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept very bitterly. And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have trespassed against our God, and have taken pagan wives from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel in spite of this. Now therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. Be of good courage, and do it.” Then Ezra arose, and made the leaders of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear an oath that they would do according to this word. So they swore an oath. Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity. And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the descendants of the captivity, that they must gather at Jerusalem, and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the instructions of the leaders and elders, all his property would be confiscated, and he himself would be separated from the assembly of those from the captivity. So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of heavy rain. Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have transgressed and have taken pagan wives, adding to the guilt of Israel. Now therefore, make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives.” Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, “Yes! As you have said, so we must do. But there are many people; it is the season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have transgressed in this matter. Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.” Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support. Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain heads of the fathers’ households, were set apart by the fathers’ households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. By the first day of the first month they finished questioning all the men who had taken pagan wives.

The day after this feast they started separating the people with their unlawful wives. foreigners

after reading the law.. this brought conviction to the people. this revealed the sinfulness in their lives which caused them to mourn. Then they worshipped God grateful that they had salvation on Him.

Nehemiah 9:3 “And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for one-fourth of the day; and for another fourth they confessed and worshiped the Lord their God.”

last week we studied that they stood for 6 hours.

1/4 of the day they read which is 3 hours.

12 hours being the acknowledge length of a Jewish day.

The Hebrew practiced open confession admitting their sins to one another. but now we have Christ..This was usually done after reading the law. Then worshipping God would follow.

Nehemiah 9:4–5 “Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani stood on the stairs of the Levites and cried out with a loud voice to the Lord their God. And the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said: “Stand up and bless the Lord your God Forever and ever! “Blessed be Your glorious name, Which is exalted above all blessing and praise!”

Nehemiah 8:7 “Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place.”

So these men had a place to stand which was the scaffolds or pulpits, whence the Levites usually addressed the people. There were probably several placed at convenient distances, to prevent confusion and the voice of one drowning those of the others.

So if they were all saying this at the same time .This probably was rehearsed.

This is the longest prayer in the bible with 1213 words

Praising God

Matthew 6:9–13 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

First praise God. Hallowed be your namr.

second confession ask for forgiveness and they we are to forgive all that have done us wrong.

Spoke with a loud voice. Such an exertion, of course, was indispensably necessary, in order that the speakers might be heard by the vast multitude congregated in the open air. But these speakers were then engaged in expressing their deep sense of sin, as well as fervently imploring the forgiving mercy of God; and “crying with a loud voice” was a natural accompaniment of this extraordinary prayer meeting, as violent gestures and vehement tones are always the way in which the Jews, and other people in the East, have been accustomed to give utterance to deep and earnest feeling

6-31 history lesson. going over what they were just read and seeing all the times that the people disobeyed, turned away, did not heed, stiffened their necks, hardened their hearts.

It is so easy to see other people and their lives when they are sinning or doing wrong. And to recognize it very clearly. But we struggle , we seem to always sin or turn from God over and over again.

32-37 Plea for God to in intervene.

They make a promise. a document and have it sealed showing their intent to obey God.

Then God will restore us.
