The Gospel John 19

Intro

wrapping up John in a couple weeks

Betrayal and Arrest

the last words of Jesus before the betrayal from John

I have overcome the world

the come and take him and he makes sure they only take him

Peter is ready to fight it out to the end as long as Jesus is standing there next to him

once Jesus begins down a path he doesn’t understand his attitude changes

Peter’s Denial

all while following along to see what happens

Peter, the one who walked on water

the one who gave the truth that is the cornerstone

the one who saw the transfiguration

he doesn’t want anything to do with the one he considers to have failed him

or at least to have given up some how

the rooster crowing is surely only insult to injury

Pilate and the High Priest

the priests bring him in and they can’t outwit him or coerce him into saying on record what they want him to say

if that were the case it would have worked earlier

they beat him and mock him

in other accounts they will bring false witnesses against him all day

Pilate imprisons him and questions him and can make no sense of the whole deal

Pilate even tries to find a way out

but the people scream for Barabbas

the people chant crucify over and again

Application

Jesus did exactly what he came to do, even though no one else understood

its a lot easier to scream out against something with the crowd

its a lot easier to deny and hide from what you don’t understand

than to have faith in the good God is working toward in a way I just can’t make out yet
