Title: Putting a dagger in the heart of Worry
*pray*
Series: The Peace I give to you
John 14:27 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Not Temp or Psuedo Peace | Working through 2 thieves - Worry and Anger.
Part 1: Worry. Week 1; Rejoice always in the Lord - how? Trading what if, for What is
2: But in Everything - Cast your anxiety on Him - How? giving it to Jesus
3. Contagious Calm - Epiekes - Having our eyes opened - Lord is at Hand.
Philippians 4:4–9 ESV
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Concentrate on Philippians 4:8-9 today.
Go to quick story - Help us understand how we got here - What to do.
Story in OT - Elkanah - 2 Wives = Hannah and Peninnah
Peninnah = Kids
Hannah = God closed Womb
1 Samuel 1:6–7 ESV
And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.
Anyone been here? Enemies Provokoing - THE enemy provoking? Year on year.
Breeding ground for Worry & Anxiety.
“Because it seems that God is not moving, and I can’t control it, the only option is to worry
This is where Lies are planted.
Tip Men; Don’t do what Hannah’s husband did:
1 Samuel 1:8 ESV
And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”
What did Hannah do?
1 Samuel 1:10 ESV
She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.
First she Prayed | Then She worshipped.
1 Samuel 1:19 (ESV)
They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord;
1 Samuel 1:20 ESV
And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”
In Due Time = Hebrew = תְּקוּפָה = T’qu’pa(h)
means = At the Turning Point!!
Point: There will be a turning point - The question is how, can we be like Hannah?
We have been through Journey - Let’s bring it home with some actionable steps.
Philippians 4:8–9 ESV
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
2 Instructions - Think and Act.
“Think” = Dwell, or Meditate, sit on these things, constantly.
and then Practice - Bible Says - Make every effort.
So what do we do?
We renovate our mind
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Renewal = Renovation = We’re gonna knock down some walls - Build better ones.
3 Little Pigs
Not enough to just leave it in rubble - Rebuild our mind on God’s Truth.
Matthew 7:24 ESV
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Those that BUILD THEIR HOUSE on the FIRM FOUNDATION - We need to Build.
Knock down walls of Lies - Build walls of Truth.
Cyclone Protectors on the Windows - These are the promises of God
Lift Shield of Faith - Don’t let enemies arrows land. Then;
2. We submit to God’s Will
What ever is____…Think and Practice these things. WOAH = Hard.
Truth = Person = Name = Jesus. Can only think and Practice on these things - Submitted and LED by Holy Spirit.
John 16:13–14 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
God speaks to us - Through Holy Spirit. Flesh cannot comprehend or hear from God.
Bible says - don’t be drunk but be FILLED with the Spirit.
Does not mean, more of Holy Spirit - being Led More BY the Holy Spirit.
We are submitting to the Spirit and Turning AWAY from Flesh.
Galatians 5:16 ESV
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
This is what it looks like:
Enemy: What if this thing doesn’t work out? - Arrow - Flesh lets it land | We start thinking - See you can’t control anything - We get on the merry go round.
Link to a chain - Enemy starts with a link, not a chain.
No, instead we capture that thought - make it obedient to Christ.
We turn to God’s Promises | Then Submit to the way HE LEADS US TO WALK IT OUT.
not as worrier, Warrior.
Colossians 3:17 ESV
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
We are LED by Spirit - Submit to God’s Will and;
3. We lean into the WHAT IS of the Cross.
Paul in Lystra - They tried setting him and Barnabas up as God’s. Paul said no - What happened;
Acts 14:19 ESV
But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.
Anyone beaten up here?
Paul was left for Dead. Prob good place to stay away from…
Acts 14:20 ESV
But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.
How?
1 Corinthians 2:1–2 ESV
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
Preach Christ Crucified…why? Listen;
The Cross is our true north and Cross shows us a few things.
maybe compass illustration.
The Cross reminds us that God’s goodness trumps our worst situation.
400 years of silence - We where in Worst situation.
The Cross reminds us that even when it looks like Chaos, God is in control.
Whipped, beaten - Chaos, no, Control. Wasn’t nice, but it was necessary.
The Cross reminds us that even in the worst of Ashes, God brings Beauty.
The resurrection - 3rd Day.
Which means, What If can lead to What IS but also…EVEN IF.
EVEN IF the worst happens, I WILL PRAY AND PRAISE - Why? Because of the truth of the Cross.
Philippians 1:21 ESV
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
What are we going to do?
Renovate our Minds
Submit to the Lord’s Will
Lean on the What IS of the Cross.
Stand - Read Key passage.
