Hebrews

Author: unknown

Candidates are: Paul, Barnabas, Apollos, Luke.
Paul:
Pauls letter are all claimed by him in the introduction: Hebrews is written anonymously.
Chapter 2 indicates that the writer heard about the gospel from those who heard if from Jesus, but Paul claimed apostleship, having received the revelation of the gospel directly from Jesus.
When Paul quoted from the OT he either paraphrased or quoted from the Hebrew OT. The book of Hebrews quotes (40 times) it is always from the Septuagint (Greek OT)
Barnabas : Levite and would have had the knowledge base the letter required.
Apollos: Would have had the educational background to write a letter with this degree of sophistication.
Luke: And the claim is that the letter of Hebrews was actually a sermon from Paul, that Luke recorded and then wrote.

Audience: Unknown

The author assumes the reader has a thorough knowledge of The Old Testament:
Abraham becoming the Nation of Israel.
Moses leading them out of Egypt to Mt. Sinai.
Where they received the Law (Torah and the Covenant)
Where they established the Priests and the Tabernacle.
Where they wondered through the desert for 40 years in route to the promised land.
HEBREWS - Jewish Christians
What we would call messianic jews.

Purpose: Elevate Jesus above all/ Encourage the reader not to become lazy or legalistic in their faith.

Elevate Jesus
Chapters 1&2 Jesus is superior to the angels and torah.
Ch. 3&4 Jesus is superior to Moses and the Promised Land.
Ch. 5-7 Priests & Melchizedek
Ch. 8-10 Jesus is superior to the Sacrifice and Covenant.
Not become lazy or legalistic
This would affect how and why they worship
Karate Kid example.
Hebrews 1:1–3 NASB95
1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

God’s Final Revelation

A once and for all revelation is superior to all that came before.
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Jesus is heir of all things

Psalm 2:7–8 NASB95
7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.
Matthew 28:18 NASB95
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

The world was made through Christ

Genesis 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
vs. 3 God said: Let there be light.
vs 6 God said: Let there be an expanse..
vs. 9 God said:
vs. 11 God said:
vs. 14 God said:
vs. 20 God said:
vs. 24 God said:
vs. 26 God said: Let us make man in Our image.
vs. 29 God said:
By the Word of God everything was created.
John 1:1–3 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
John 1:14 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The world was made through Jesus.

Jesus is the radiance and exact nature of God.

He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature.
Radiance of His glory: He is the rays of light from the sun.
John 1:14 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 2:11 NASB95
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
Exact representation of His nature: He is the imprint on the wax from the seal.

Jesus upholds all things

Jesus upholds all things by the word of His power.
Colossians 1:17 NASB95
17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
Entropy:
The law of entropy: the Law of Entropy says that when left alone in natural states, eventually everything goes into disorder.
This is as true for your vehicle as it is for the Human Genome. Look up Human Genome Decay.
But this is why we maintain our vehicle. We change the oil. We replace the brake pads.
Jesus is what holds the world together, until such time that He wont.

Jesus sat down at the right hand of God

Mark 16:19 NASB95
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
Three more times in Hebrews:
8:1, 10:12, 12:2
Psalm 110:1 NASB95
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
It is not only a place of highest Honor.
It carries the idea that the sacrificial work for the sins of man has been completed.
John 19:30 NASB95
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
