Our doctrine this week is the trinity.
So….to prepare….I looked up a theologian’s explanation on how to explain the trinity to a 5 year old.
Mainly for myself, not for you…
You know what he said…don’t try to dumb it down.
Just explain it..in layers…over and over.
So I have no illustration today…because every illustration falls short.
we are not going to unpack all aspects of the trinity today.
and If the concept of the trinity overwhelms or confuses you…
it’s ok…this is just a layer…
the book of Revelation invites us to LOOK FOR the working of the trinity as it is filled with rich language and imagery about the words and acts of the triune God.
There is no one specific verse in scripture that explains the working of the trinity.
However, as you read through scripture, over and over you see the working of the trinity together in perfect unity.
It’s a concept our minds cannot understand, but one that we claim because of scripture.
So what do we mean when we say trinity.
We mean that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are ALL equally God and cooperate and collaborate in everything God accomplishes.
One is not greater than the other…they all..are equally..God. yet 3 distinct persons….and they are unified in both nature and mission.
The triune God communicates with one voice and purpose.
In the book of Revelation it is the Holy Spirit who revealed to John the things to come and instructed him to write down everything he saw.
It is God the Father who sits on the throne with power, honor, and glory to hold the scroll of judgment in His hand,
and it is God the Son who is the only worthy one to take the scroll and carry out the judgment.
Just as all three members of the Trinity were actively involved in creation- together-they will also bring about the completion of God’s redemption story.
and as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit work together in distinct ways- they demonstrate the wonder’s of God’s glory.
When I do not believe that God is one yet three, I limit the truth about who God is to what my mind can comprehend. And when I do that I view him as less than He truly is….and in the process I miss the ongoing and eternal work of God.
But when I believe in the majestic and mysterious triune God…I rest….knowing that my understanding is limited. But I live in relationship with a God knows no limits.
Ladies- you can believe that the trinity is always FOR YOU! And just like The Father, Son, and Spirit will complete God’s plan for redemption on earth- you can be confident that God will also complete the work He started in you…He is for you….How does this bring you comfort and security in your life right now?
As God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit dwell in and enjoy perfect community…..we were also designed for unity in community….we were designed to live, grow, and serve together with God and His people.
– It’s what we strive for week in and week out at BSF…to grow together as one body of Christ in the context of community and as we do we push each other and the women and children of our class to a deeper relationship with God and His people.
What does it look like for you to model unity and communion in your BSF role this year- in our leadership circle? in our class? our discussion groups or our Children’s Program? and What step will you take towards that goal today?
Swap a sticky note with your neighbor and we will pray in moment.
