My Sinful Body
My Sinful Body
1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?
Law can also be trranscribed as rules.
Prior Rom 6:20-23 Slaves of sin or slaves of God. Your choice to what you pick, but you do pick one or the other . Abstaining is not an option. We always have a master. Denial is sin too.
Jews knew the law.
Laws and rules tend to follow us forever. Think of a rule your parents gave you while you were young.
Top shelf of refrigerator.
Whether you do it or not now, it will likely cross your mind from time to time.
2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.
39 A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.
The union of marriage is always under attack. I don’t know many people who get married for the benefits anymore! I did in the Marine Corps. What benefits? Living allowance, comrats (food allowance). Medical for the spouse. But this is the exception. The tax break is not enough of a reason to be married.
Until death do us part. That is the goal, and it is not easy.
Love, what is love? 1 Cor 4:4-8
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
Marriage is God’s union between and man and a woman. When God is taken out of the picture, the union of marriage is perverted.
3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.
For those who have done this in their lifetime, we are adulterers, confirming we are sinners. But we were anyways. But today we walk in the newness of life with Jesus, and Jesus forgives.
31 “Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
Who else commits adultery?
27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
People don’t like to talk about this. I don’t know a person who doesn’t struggle with this. But I know men who try not be involved with this. We can see it in their actions. With this being said, I belief most people have committed adultery in some sense. Move on, don’t stay in your sin!
4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
A lot of people were one way before Christ, and different in Christ. Try becoming a believer with your old spouse. You may have been surprised to see their reaction. If it was never a topic before, you may have never realized this person’s hate for Jesus.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
19 For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Dead to the law when we become born in the Spirit.
Bear fruit to God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
Bear fruit! Be fruitful! You don’t have to serve in ministry or go on a mission trip to be fruitful. Be fruitful at the grocery store.
Don’t be a part time Christian. Comedian Michael calling a sister in church. Who is this and how did you get this number. Hello sister, this is Mike from the CHURRRCCCCHHHHHHH.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
It is a constant battle with the flesh. Recognize: The results of the battle, recognize the stages of the battle, understand the weapons in the battle, utilize the weapons early, and reinforce yourself with those who can help you win.
What did you do that was counted as failure? It will likely carry significance to you.
When does this start to get where you went? You have to realize what triggers you.
Weapons:
Prayer
Bible
Worship
Fellowship
Church
This is why our walk can’t be a routine. You May study the word, pray, worship and go to church. But if you are still losing major battles, then you are living a routine, and not using the weapons to fight your battles.
Reinforce. We need to have a relationship with others that can strengthen each other.
Everyone should have a Paul and a Timothy, a teacher and a student.
Who can you call when you need strength?
6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.
6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
The letter is the physical letters of the law, so basically think of the law.
Being in the Spirit, we don’t have to try to conform to the law. Conform to Jesus is not the right answer either though. Being in Jesus, fulfills the law without focusing on the law. Jesus fulfilled the law.
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
The law itself, is not sin. it is just words, defining how we should act.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
You shall not covet.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
21 ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’
33 I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel.
Paul journey in Acts, pointing out that he worked while he was in those areas to take care of himself and for those who were with him.
8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.
The desire of sin.......
Even when we know the outcome, the results, and the consequences, sin is still tough to battle.
15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.
56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.
The law can help, by why stop there, just choose Jesus.
9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.
You didn’t know any rules until you did something somebody didn’t want you to do. At one point we are all introduced to rules/laws.
10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death.
5 You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.
11 And I gave them My statutes and showed them My judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them.’
13 Yet the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes; they despised My judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them’; and they greatly defiled My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them in the wilderness, to consume them.
21 “Notwithstanding, the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, and were not careful to observe My judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them’; but they profaned My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them in the wilderness.
28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.”
7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away,
12 Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.”
The law is a trap, but still better than living by no guidelines. The law can keep us alive, but we are not living by living by the rules. You are not living in freedom. A slave to the law still comes with disapointment.
11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.
You are all good until your not. How long did that take?
12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.
8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
If you could follow the law, it is good for you. But that is the problem, you can’t. It is impossible. And then you circle back to the law is not living in freedom.
13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.
This is the trade off. The results of sin is death. The result of the law is not freedom. Jesus is the answer for forgiveness of sin and freedom in the law.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
20 So Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?”
And he answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord:
25 But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up.
17 And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.
16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
The law is Godly, as it comes from God. Sin is carnal, fleshly. We live in the flesh. It’s like this anchor we have no choice but to bring it with us.
15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
This is why we never arrive until the day we arrive to stand with Jesus.
16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.
The law is not bad, but it becomes our new work. We get no rest in the law. Look at the Jews now. There life is built around the law, and the law is a schedule of events. It is a lot of work.
17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
The fallen nature is the sin that dwells in us. It is not a learned behavior. Even if we could perform perfectly outwardly, we can never do it inwardly.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
21 And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
It is not a surprise to God, but to us.
19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
I have good to do everyday in my heart, and in my prayers. I want to be a good representation of Jesus. But at times I go on auto pilot. I am like a different person at times. I tell myself don’t do something, and then I do it anyways.
20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
The understanding that what we do is not necessarily who we are. But this is how the world looks at us.
21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good.
Is there a law that speaks against what I do? Most likely.
Romans 7:22 “For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.”
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,
4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
God’s law is a blessing. We can meditate about it, to be aware of the law.
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?
11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
My eyes are on the lookout for lust, my ears are listening for something juicy, and my mouth to say something stupid. Our bodies are prone to sinning.
24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
It is who will deliver us, not what program. It is who we need to look to, have the relationship with.
25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
Have a Godly Mind! Your mind is where you make something important. Make Jesus important!
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
to condemn. The suffix -ma makes it the result of judgment. A decision against someone, a condemnatory judgment.
If you walking in the relationship of Jesus, there is no condemnation, meaning there is no judgement in the flesh. This does not mean you are not going to do fleshly things, or not sin. When we walk in Jesus, this is not what our focus is, by a byproduct of the sin in our lives.
