What comes out
While we live in a time that is growing increasingly obsessed with moral purity in regards to food, Jesus reminds us that it is What comes out of our hearts that defiles us. He is entirely different
What we eat is making us sick – this is no criticism of those who are choosing to eat healthy. There are also ethical claims to be made about what we eat, but corruption starts in the heart.
From the heart come evil thoughts: not just impulses or desires, but “dialogues,” rationales, justifications, excuses.
The corrupt heart excuses our lust
Lionizes our greed
Justifies our agressions
Exults our pride and deception
Gives rationale to our foolishness, i.e. our rejection of God’s thinking
Jesus’ heart is different. From his heart flows compassion for sinners, and offers freedom from their sin (even their besetting sins!) by giving us a new heart and a mind conformed to his thinking.
Make them known to your children and your children’s children
