Offensive Good News
Jesus could have come to us with a message that is comfortable to our understanding and situation. He did not, however, come to accommodate His message to our corrupt and shallow thinking. He challenges and invites us to eat his flesh.
He gives His flesh for the life of the world.
The offense shows itself in that they were unwilling to accept Jesus as the bread from heaven – the daily sustenance provided by God for the people of God. They reject the spiritual eating of Christ by faith.
When they began to argue (during the worship service!) with Jesus, he does not back down and smooth out a simile. He doubles down and drives us beyond only spiritual eating. Jesus changes his language to an unambiguous devouring of his flesh and drinking his blood.
If you will not accept spiritual eating, you will be horrified at the thought of sacramental eating.
Jesus offers BOTH and in eating there is life
