The NET Bible Chapter 6
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This mystery is great—but I am actually speaking with reference to Christ and the church
Trip and Wendy
Joe Bailey
On behalf of Tripp and Wendy, I want to welcome you all.
Please be seated.
In his 1st letter to the Corinthia church Paul defines what Love really looks like and how love behaves.
Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful. It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
The NET Bible (Ephesians 5:31–32)
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This mystery is great—but I am actually speaking with reference to Christ and the church
Days like this are rare and wonderful.
Often, we attend weddings and what we see is a 15 minute ceremony where two people make some promises to each other, swap rings , swap spit and call it a day.
But I tell you that there is something far more wonderful that takes place. The Apostle Paul claimed it was a great mystery.
It’s is my hope that the mystery and wonder of this day does not allude you,but that you will leave here feeling like you had been a part of something truly special.
In his Letter to the the Saints in
Ephesus ,The Apostle Paul speaks of the Covenant of Marriage, how a Man is to Love and Lead his Bride.
That unselfish love he described to the Corinthians is what he has in mind. It is a love that steps well beyond a man’s own needs and thinks of hers first.
Husbands, He say; love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her
The term Husband is an agricultural term that references a man who tends to the vines in the vineyard. He is responsible for nurturing and caring for the Vine and creating the right conditions so it will bear much fruit in season.
As true husband, it is the man’s responsibility to care for and create the right conditions so his bride can flourish, grow and bear fruit in her season.
When a man truly husbands his wife, she is his priority, even over his own life and she becomes a great source of joy and blessing, not just for him but all that are around them.
His love is meant to be a safe, secure space for her to flourish and grow and that space will cost him a part of himself.
He speaks of How the Woman is to Honor and Respect her Husband and to give him the space to Lead, not because she is unable or not strong enough to lead herself..... but because it honors the heart of God and helps to meet the deepest needs God has hidden in the heart of her man.
When God gave Eve to Adam, she was called his Ezer Kenegbo, which roughly translated means, his life saver, his close partner, the one wars beside him, who watches out for him and guards his blindside.
She was intended to be indispensable part of his life.
Paul says that this sort of relationship is a Deep mystery of God, that reveals something wonderful and secret about His greater divine plan,
A secret that is to be rehearsed and demonstrated by marriage and which finds its fulfillment in Jesus and His Bride the Church.
If Marriage is indeed a Divine Revelation of God’s plan and a Picture of Christ and His Bride... and if the Bride price was Jesus’ Own LIFE..
Then there’s little wonder why God has placed so great a value on this institution.
Today, we are here to witness and celebrate the Mystery of a Power that reflects a story and power far greater than just one man and one woman.
It’s a covenant ritual meant to reflect the great love which God has loved us with and his desire to have us as his loyal sons and daughters.
