1 Peter 1:18-19

1 Peter 1:18–19 CSB
For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.

Peter’s Audience: Those Who Have Been Redeemed

Those Who Have Been Redeemed Know It
This does not mean that the redeemed cannot experience doubt (John the Baptist doubted)
We know it because He has given us His Spirit (1 Jhn 4:13)
Redeemed from an Empty Way of Life
Empty of Righteousness (1 Pet 1:15
1 Peter 1:15 CSB
But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct;
Empty Way of Life Was Inherited
Original Sin from Adam (Rom 5)
Particular Cultural Sins from Babel
Generational sins from Parents (Ex 34; Abraham’s sin; David’s sin)

The Bride Price

Bride price
What is the price Jesus paid for His bride?
1 Corinthians 6:20 CSB
for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.
Not Silver or Gold
Isaiah 52:3–4 (CSB)
For this is what the Lord says:
“You were sold for nothing,
and you will be redeemed without silver.”
2. By His Shed Blood
Acts 20:28 CSB
Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he purchased with his own blood.
3. Precious Blood of the Spotless Lamb
The Sacrificial Lamb
Old Covenant was a Type
New Covenant is Fulfillment
1 Corinthians 5:7 CSB
Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new unleavened batch, as indeed you are. For Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed.
Hebrews 9:14 CSB
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God?

For What?

To Glorify God (1 Cor 6:20)
How grateful should you be for not being imprisoned in the sin of Adam? Of your wicked ancestors? Christ freed you from that bondage. Praise Him for it.
For Good Works (Tt 2:14
Titus 2:14 CSB
He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works.
Christ breaks the cycle. Our goal is to push further into the light than the generation before us, and to set up our children to go even further than we have. Some sins are hard for you to break because you have seen them modeled. You lived within those patterns and habits. Some godly behaviors are difficult and even awkward for you because you didn’t see those things modeled. Trust that as you exercise faithfulness, however awkward or hard it may be, God will honor it, and the good things that may be difficult for you will be more natural for your children, by God’s grace.
